i know petty, but i'm bummed...
before we got pregnant, i was talking in conversation with my DH and his sister overheard me say that i would like to use sophie for my first born daughter...
fast-forward to now, we're both expecting and i just found out she's using sophie for her baby (she's expecting a  )
i'm expecting a  of course---
just bummed 'cuz i won't be able to use that name now... i wish i'd just kept my mouth shut 
no flames, please---not really blaming SIL, but just bummed

That really stinks. I guess this is why people keep their potential names to themselves. That always seemed silly to me, but makes sense when I hear things like this. I'm sure when you have a you'll come up with an even more beautiful name (I do like the name Sophie too.)

i feel so sheepish for feeling "heartbroken" about this... DH doesn't understand---
but this is the same SIL who planned a trip to tahiti a few weeks before our wedding, knowing we had booked tahiti for our honeymoon 6 months before... 
all DH can say is, you should be flattered she likes your ideas...
i am contemplating using sophie for a middle name for a future daughter, but i would hate for her to think WE were the ones who copied her.

Seriously, that's not right of her. But, think of it this way, imitation is the best form of flattery. I know it's frustrating, but somethimes you just have to  and move on. It's not worth stressing over. Next time you know not to say anything around her, that's all.

This happened to us too. I told DH's aunt that I loved the name Mandi Nicole for a girl. Two weeks later, her daughter named their child Amanda Nicole! I was fuming...I understand! We are naming our daughter Mandi Nicole anyway...it was always my choice and I am not letting her get the best of me! I hope you have the chance to do the same!

I have a SIL who likes to 'flatter' me a lot. All I can say is that I just do things without consulting her, I let her find out after my idea is executed, whether that be a haircut or home decorating or even the mailing labels that she still copied. Its all good if she 'flatters' me after I've already done whatever it is I intended to do!

That really stinks especially because you said that was a name youwould like to use. It happened to me. My cousin used the name Kaitlyn, which is a name we were going to use if we were having a girl and we are. But I can't be too mad beacause we never said anything to her. I'm sure when the time comes you find an even better name.

I would be bummed too! I want the name Sophie if we have a girl, but a co-worker at work just picked that name, Sophia if SHE has a girl, so lets hope she has a boy!

While it stinks...you may never actual use the name so I wouldn't even discuss it with her for now..or better yet..tell her "You know DH and I were talking..we love the name Jenna if we have another baby" hahahha..then all of a sudden Sophie will become Jenna and you get Sophie back again

DD's stepmom is pregnant (I am due 8 weeks before her) we are both having girls
we talk regularly and have agreed that once one of us choses a name the other cant use it
I just think that is the fair thing to do
sorry your SIL took the name BUT at least you have a neice with the name
you may never even have a girl..... I swore I was having a boy this time but I am having girl #3 so I will never be able to use my Favorite name which is ......Logan

I don't think its petty! It happened to me and my dearest/longest friend. Growing up I always said I'd name my daughter Emma - I had something for this name before it was even popular. Well last November she found out she was having her 2nd . She told me after her level II she was going to name her Emma even though she knows I've always said I loved it....her reason - it sounds good with her last name and she actually said who knows if I'm ever going to have a girl or kids. I was hurt more by the things she said to me more than taking the name.
When I told her I was hurt by her comments she told me to get over myself. We are no longer friends.
I could never use that name b/c it has such a negative experience linked with it now.

I would be bummed too. My "best friend" did this to me too.
You could still use the name (either for a first or middle name) if you have a daughter down the line. You could always just say something to her like "since I wanted to use it from even before DS was born, I am still going to..."
