I may get flamed for this....
but I have been waiting for my 5:00 washer and dryer delivery all freakin day and when the driver finally calls he can BARELY speak English.....it is like talking to a 2 year old trying to give this guy directions. ALSO - do you not check out the address before you deliver something
And then I just ordered pizza and AGAIN they barely speak English so what should have taken 20 seconds took me 5 minutes....I could have just made the damn pizza myself!!!
Sorry, just had to VENT

Re: I may get flamed for this....
It's okay. I am an ESL teacher and deal with people like this all day and sometimes I get annoyed. I think the idea is not that everyone should speak English but more than people who are hired to do certain jobs should be able to speak the language. Every job usually has requirements and a language requirement would be good for some.

I went to the post office the other day & I could barely understand the woman. I was like are you kidding?
I remember when I first got a job doing customer service I had to change the way I spoke so that people would understand me. And thats just a Queens accent!!

i totally understand. i called american airlines (yes, american airlines) a few months ago to check on rates and reservation. after 10 minutes on the phone w/ the lady and repeadily (politely) telling her that i could not understnad her and could i please speak w/ someone else i had to hang up and call back. told her that i need to speak w/ someone that can speak and understand english. called back 5 minutes later and the SAME thing happened w/ a different agent. ended up booking on another airline.

And for this reason alone, I decided to never buy another DELL computer because they are INFAMOUS for hiring people who cannot properly speak English!!! PET PEEVE!!!

Re: I may get flamed for this....
I think what is frustrating and I may add to the flamage, is that if you were in Spain or France, you'd be expected to speak the language of the natives. While I understand the need to employ immigrants and fully support their desire to better their lives here, it is frusrating when their is a language barrier.

i agree. i work as an ESL teacher as well, and i deal with people that are learning english. i can get frustrated sometimes, but they are learning and trying so i have to be patient.
where i live (australia), in order for immigrants to get any type visa in which they could work (from what i understand: student or permanent resident) they have to get a certain test score on an english test called IELTS. The US does not have something like that, b/c the US doesnt have an official language, whereas Australia does. English is not an official language, b/c the US is a multi cultural nation and this has been a big debate for quite some time.
Australia is pretty strict on immigration and based their system on the US's and then added more. entering illegally is far harder than it is in the US. even tourists have to get a tourist visa (free, and you do not have to speak english for that visa) and they (immigration DIMIA) keep track very well.
english is a huge business here, with many types of english schools. i think the test thingy idea to get a visa is a great idea, but the problem that i see with it, is that they may pass this one test (which has all parts on it: speaking, listening, writing, and reading) but when they go out in the world to work, english isnt like it is on the test. But i have found that i have far less problems dealing with non-english speakers here than in the US. occasionally, there are a few in asian (asian population is HUGE here, and the Brazilians are the next group that are migrating here) places that do not understand, but they understand enough.

Re: I may get flamed for this....
That drives me up the wall. Wouldn't you think for jobs that require interaction with the public the employees must speak and understand English well? Would they hire someone who mumbled?

That's because Dell's "home" support is based out of India. They outsource their technical support from them. The business support is based out of Texas, thankfully for me. I talk to them all the time.
I had to translate with the Dell tech one day because my Dad's laptop wouldn't boot. Dad is hard of hearing to begin with, can you imagine what that conversation would have been like?

Re: I may get flamed for this....
My mother and grandparents came here from another country and learned the language...so I hear you. Most people when you travel speak their language and English, but many people come here and don't bother to learn....I hear ya.
