I need a custom-made door - any recs?
We would like to replace the side door of our house. Our house is brick (80-years-old) and nothing - I mean NOTHING - in this house is a standard size.
We had Home Depot come and measure and just to have the door frame fitted for a standard size door, it would be around $1,000 - JUST FOR THE FRAMING - because they would have to cut brick.
We are looking for someone who can make us a door what would fit in the area that we have. We would need a glass pane in there, as we would like to be able to see out of it (being our side entrance, and all )
The door width is 28 inches and there is NOTHING out there that we can just buy and pop into that spot.
Does anyone know of anyone who could do this? A carpenter? A handy DH? Any and all recommendations would be so much appreciated!
Damn this old house and it's charm and character!

What about a place like Elegant Entries. They would probably do a free estimate and at least give you an idea of which way you could go.

Honestly, if it was my house, I would go to ReStore in Ronkonkoma http://suffolkrestore.com/home , buy a used, solid wood door (with a window), and just trim the edges to fit. That way, you get a custom size, but it would only cost about $50 or so, and a little bit of labor.

Da Vinci & Co - they are located in Lynbrook on Merrick Road. They are wonderful!! We have similar probs with our doors in our house...we ordered a solid wood Simpson door and he was prepared to have to cut it down to size where necessary...we ended up being able to accommodate the new door - once they pulled off molding and removed the old door there was this big gap in the wall that allowed us to use the door as is without cutting it down...but we were prepared for the worst! (516) 596-6666 GOOD LUCK!

Re: I need a custom-made door - any recs?
I think that Home Depot is always a bit over-priced with their installs...I'll ask my husband (he owns a contracting company) at lunch today what he thinks would be a fair price so at least you can have that to go by...do you definitely want to move up to a standard sized door or are you considering having a door cut to fit your size?
Re-read your post...is your inside moulding original to the house? You would definitely want to make sure that whoever does this would be able to take the moulding off carefully, reuses what they can, and is able to get more of the same OR would be able to replace it all with something you choose...

I have always used Active Door and Window. They advertise on here, actually. We have replaced two doors and ~10 windows and we still need more.
They have great service and good prices.
Good Luck!

That is who we went to for our new door & screens. Bob Jr is awesome & so very nice. He is located in the Holtsville location. When I am ready to get another door done that is certainly where I will go again.
