I need helpful tips for painting old furniture.
DH and I don't have the money right now to buy ourselves a new bedroom set. We're currently using family hand-me-down furniture. It's solid wood and nice construction, just old and farty looking. I want to paint it white and put new hardware on it.
Those that have painted old furniture, please give me your best tips. I'm a bit afraid of this project.

Re: I need helpful tips for painting old furniture.
sand, sand, sand!! Most important if you want the paint to stick and be durable. I did my bedroom set... I got 2 dressers, a bed, and a nightstand for $75 but hated the wood tone so I sanded it really good, make sure all the gloss is off. Used 2 types of sandpaper, the first was 110 I think, it's rougher, then finished it off with the 220 grain. I have an electric sander so it made it easier and faster. you can borrow mine if you don't have one. Then I primed it, just one coat. Then I pained mine an off white color... white chocolate from BM. I chose flat paint because I sanded it after it dried to distress the corners because I like that vintage-y feel. Because I used 2 flat coats, after I sanded to distress I topped it off with a clear polyurethane coat. I spray painted the brass pulls with oil rubbed bronze but home depot sells a pack of really cute 10 knobs for 10 bucks in silver and oil rubbed bronze.
good luck and if you have any questions feel free to fm me
