please offer painting tips

Okay, long story short, the house is still not painted. I need to get the DR, kitchen, and living room painted this week before we move in... Any tips?

I haven't painted in ages. I have good quality primer, rollers, and brushes. How do I know when to use a roller and when to use a brush? (Stupid question, I know...)

Any tips would be helpful!

TY! I just didn't want to assume. Chat Icon

I have a 1' space above my built in china cabinet that needs to be painted. I'm assuming I need to use brushes for that area... Let's hope I'm good with the brush marks -- or rather, lack of brush marks... Chat Icon

Lots of the blue painter's tape - extremely helpful if you have the patience to use it.

Re: please offer painting tips

Blue painter's tape - check. My inlaws bought tons of it! (And they're finally going home! Whew!)

Note to self -- actually use it!

THANKS!

Re: please offer painting tips

just make sure that you take the painters tape off as soon as possible after it has dried otherwise it get stuck and almost impossible to remove.

also if you are painting ceilings you might want to make sure you have an extender for the roller.

Re: please offer painting tips

Oh that's right, I do have to paint the ceilings... duh. I think my ILs bought an extender. If not, I'll be off to the BM store or Home Depot to get one!

Thanks for the reminder.

Regarding ceilings, does anyone know if there's a certain kind of "rough brush" or something that puts more of a textured finish on the ceilings? We don't have sand paint, but something that puts some texture there... I don't want to scrape the ceilings right now, but we did have some parts of the ceiling patched, and now they are flat while the rest is textured..?

Along with an extender for ceilings, see if you can find a splatter guard for the roller. It'll prevent a mess and it'll keep the paint out of your eyes!

They can't come this week... but you will be excited to know we hired a plumber. Chat Icon

The other problem with a painter is that they are refinishing the downstairs floors this week -- so you can't walk on them until the evenings... Chat Icon

If it doesn't get done, the painter will come after we move in (they hvae to for one hallway anyway)...

Re: please offer painting tips

Go top to bottom - ceiling first, then walls. You want to cut your walls before painting them (the corners, where the wall mets the ceiling, etc).

I'm not a fan of painters tape - I think if you have a steady hand and patience, you can get a cleaner line without it.

glad you hear about the plumber. You've had your share of stress for sure.

We painted some rooms before we moved in and some after.

Not the end of the world.

But when it's all done, it will be nice!!

Re: please offer painting tips

You can buy a roller with a different nap that will add more texture to the paint when you do the ceilings (ask the guy in the store - they should know).

They also sell small rollers, about three inches long - you can use that to paint above the china cabinet. You always get a better finish with the roller.

My DH uses the brush in corners and near the ceiling, but he doesn't brush with it. He dabs the paint on - takes longer, but looks more like it was done with a roller so it looks better.
