I need Kitten care tips

we are adopting a kitten and it has been YEARS since I had a cat as pet. Ideally I would like this cat to have an indoor/outdoor life. What are tips for litter box training & at what age can young cats go outside?

any other tips about kittens I need to know?

I'm no expert since I've only been a kitten mommy for under a week, but the litter box training was sooo easy!

We had to keep our baby separate from our dog and kids, so she was hanging out in her carrier for a few days. I just put her in the litterbox after meals and also in between. She knew right away what to do! I left h er first poop in the box so she could smell it the next time to remind her what to do.

Now she is roaming free in our bathroom when I cant watch her and the box is in there and she goes as she needs to. If she's out with us in the living area, she knows where to go if she has to pee/poop.

Ok, great! I was hoping I could make the bathroom her room until she's old enough to roam the house. Thanks!

This is what we did when we first got our cat. If I had to go somewhere, I would close her in the bathroom with her bed, some toys, and her food and water (her litter box was there anyway). After about a week, I would run quick errands and let her roam free to see how she did. It worked out great!

Our kitty was great, the rescue group dropped him off, set up the box for us and then put him in the box and took his paw and scratched litter. He put two and two together and took a nice poop and went to town covering the litter. We were told to get natural litter so we just flushed it down the toilet :)

Re: I need Kitten care tips

Well I don't do indoor/outdoor.... my cats are indoor only.

But when they were kittens I just kitten proofed the room I was going to keep them in. Got rid of anything that could harm them. had a small kitty litter and some food (not next to eachother of course).
because they were so small I only kept them in the one room until they were large enough to roam freely throughout the house.

Litter training them is so simple... basically once you see they are about to go... pick them up and put them in the litter box immediately. they usually catch on right after the first try... sometimes it might take 2 or 3 but it seems pretty instinctual for them.

I miss when they were little kittens!!

good luck.

Re: I need Kitten care tips

when I was a kid and we had cats, they were both indoor and outdoor. When they were kittens, we confined them to the bathroom at night, so they wouldnt get hurt and when they got old enough, my sister and I would go ourside with them and play for a bit, so they could get used to being outside.

I NEED to see pics of the kitty! Chat Icon
