I need some advice about taking over my father's affairs
Obviously he's going to be out of commission for some time, so I imagine I will have to get the keys to his apartment, start getting his mail, sorting it and start taking over his financial affairs.
What do I need to do to get started? If I want to take over his bank accounts and manage them for him, what do I need? Is a power of attorney sufficient? Do I need to hire an elder law attorney to walk me through this?
I'm at a complete loss as to how/where to get started...

I would speak to an elder care attorney. A POA covers a lot but you need a professional in that field of law to navigate the system of Medicare, SS, etc.
Also for the mail, get it forwarded via USPS.gov
