I am so sorry.
I know the pain of losing a pet.
I swear it's been 2 years now and I'm still not 100% over the death of my first cat.
Luckily we didn't have to make the decision- she died at the vet. I dont' know if I would have been strong enough to make that decision.
I feel like she knew that.
And when you talked about that night being the longest of your life- I totally felt a pang. I will NEVER forget the night before she died. The horrendous noises she was making, how I felt so helpless and scared. It was the worst night of my life. So I feel for you! 
You did do the right thing though- our animals are helpless- they can't tell us that it's time. We have to be strong for them and do what is right...even though it hurts so freakin bad.
It's a selfless act...and it stinks!
Hang in there- time does help!
