Rachel --- it is amazing that some people can be such complete azzholes and not even realize how out of touch with reality they are ---- how far off they are. It amazes me, in such a bad way.
You did the right thing by leaving. I say screw trying to be diplomatic and nicey nice in situations like that. It sounds like the yare all a bunch of idiots!

I am so sorry you had to deal with that! You did the right thing! I could never stand silent while someone said something like that to a child. It sounds to me like JT's sister is scared of her husband. G-d only knows what happens in their house. Hopefully, JT's niece will realize (somehow) that this is not the way to think or act.
