I need to know what you would do? (sorry, if its long) **Update on the bottom**
I brought my car in for a problem with the tires. Now, let me say that they worked on a recall of something with the ball joint, so when at 30000 miles my tire was tearing inside on only half the tire and it was them who worked on it last that'w where I brought it.
Anyway I drop it off lets say on Wed night, they have all day Thurs to look at it and they dont, 430 thurs I get a phone call that they need to keep the car for the next day, now its two day I'm out of work because they have no loaner. Finally, 2pm on Fri my dh calls and asks whats going on, they tell him its 140 per tire plus an alignment, now my bil is a mechanic, so he tells them he will have them call me. I speak with them and tell them no, I dont want the work done and I will pick it up later. Then she tells me that they have a cheaper tire and that she will call me back with numbers, again I tell her not to do the work until I ok the numbers. I didn't hear from her the rest of the day. I also, wanted the torn tire back.
I get home (I was out with a friend) and my dh tells me its over 400 and the car is done. The next day I go into the dealership, the service mgr tells me to take my car home, because I didn't authorize the work and my old tire is gone and he will call me back on Tues to see about #'s.
He calls me and tells me I owe him 300 not the 400+ he is giving me a break. I told him I would drop off a check.
Now, here is where I am ticked. I feel I got played. My dh says just pay him, I feel they did the work without my ok.
what would you do? I really don't want to pay for something I didn't originally authorize and I don't have the tire that I wanted back.
Any thoughts would be appreciated. I don't ever have a problem with paying for a service I just feel I have been taken advantage of, no matter how nice the service mgr wants to be.

you did not authorize the work - do not pay them
if you really have problems - pay them by them by credit card and fight with credit card
but i would not pay you did not authorize payment - you have the car do not pay

Should I contact the owner of the dealership or should I just let it go. I feel really bad, but I hate the fact that I did not authorize the work then they try to give me a "deal".

I would pay them but then I would contact BBB and file a complaint with them. The reason I saw pay them, is b/c if you don't they have a right to put you into collections in the meantime, and you don't want to screw up your credit over $300.
I went through BBB over something and they got me a good portion of my money back.
I would be very mad too! You did not sign any authortization of a work order nor did you agree to a price. Thats just not good business.

i would absolutely, positively not pay them. you did not authorize the work and were very clear about not wanting it done. i would send a certified letter to the owner of the dealership outlining what happened and let him know your position. they would have to drag me into court to get me to pay. they have some nerve.

I would talk to the owner and let him know it happened. I would also not pay until you speak to him. My dealership always calls and lets us know what happened then tell us how it can be corrected. They then ASK if that is fine and we usually say yes. This is how it is supposed to be not to do it without permission. What if you wanted to get a second opinion this doesn't allow you to get that. I would definitely talk to the owner and also let him know you are filing a complaint with BBB and consumer affairs for bad practices. Good luck and keep us posted.
ETA: I would go to another dealership if possible in the future that is what ended up happening to me after I was not satisfied with the first one we went to.

I would pay them whatever BIL says is a reasonable amount. I would do it by check only & send it along with a certified letter stating you received an estimate from another mechanic for the work done. You are giving them the fair & equitable amount, even though they did the work without any authorization from you.

Re: I need to know what you would do? (sorry, if its long)
Ok, so I spoke to my boss (who is an atty) and he suggested I write a letter to the owner of the dealership, and cc the service mgr and the better business bureau. He said to offer the price of the tires, which I need to know because of I have no paperwork, minus the cost of the tire they didn't give me back because it is possible that GoodYear may have given me some kind of credit since the tire only had 37000 miles on it.
So, that's what I did and I will update when I hear something.
Thank you for all your answers. I never not pay for a service but I just feel like I was played and I don't like that.
