I never thought I would have to post this but I'm at my literal wit's end (sleep-related, of course).

We did a modified CIO bc I couldn't do a full fledged version, it made me too sad. It works like cry it out in the sense that you let them cry, but you go in. You pick them up and the SECOND they stop crying, even if its an inch off the mattress, you put them back down. You leave, let them cry for a few minutes, as long as you can bear and do it again.
It teaches them, they you will pick them up and comfort them when they cry but will not hold them and rock them to sleep. Extend how long you let them cry, your comfort level and pick up and put down.

It sounds like he is reverse cycling, and wants to nurse at night to make up for while you are gone during the day. I think by limiting his feedings at night, you might actually be making him more upset/having him wake up more. Weaning night feedings in EBF babies is not recommended until age 1. I am right there with you, up every hour at 8 months. When it gets unbearable I sleep holding her while shes nursing.
Yeah he definitely is reverse cycling, and has been since I've been back at work. But for the first couple months that still only meant nursing 2-3 times a night. I'm still nursing plenty during the night but I can tell when he's actually hungry and when he just wants help getting back to sleep.
Last night was actually an improvement. He was able to self soothe with little to no crying more than once during the night (wake up, whine once or twice, settle himself back to sleep.) The longest we let him go before going in to help was about 5 minutes, and just waiting those few minutes helped us realize that a bunch of times we were rushing in and waking him up more.
I nursed him at 5:45, he went to bed at 6:30. Woke at 9:30 to nurse, right back to sleep. Whined once at 11 or so. Woke at 1:40, nursed. Between 3:30-5 he needed a bit of help a couple times. Nursed at 5, slept til 7. It sounds like a lot but it was honestly the best night we've had in a while!

Would you consider CIO? Like full-on, letting him cry it out, no soothing?
We tried the shushing and back rubbing nonsense with DS at first but he was having none of it.
We did full CIO at 5 months with my DS and it took 2/3 nights total. Since then he's slept 12 hours at night and he's now 5!

Nope
To each their own, but it's just not for us. I also think he legitimately still needs to eat at night. I'm not looking for him to sleep 12 hours as I don't think he is ready yet. We are just trying to gently teach him to put himself back to sleep when he is not hungry. It seems to be working. It's a slower process than CIO, for sure, but it's what I'm comfortable with right now.
