Wow - that is light! DS was over 22 lbs at 6 months!
But, people come in all different sizes... maybe your DS is going to be on the smaller side. Or maybe he is going to get his growth spurt later than others.
Was his pediatrcian concerned?
Since I only have a 7 month old I have no proven methods for improving eating... but how about trying food in shapes - like dinosaur chicken nuggets, pancakes with faces, stuff like that?

Does your ped seem concerned?

Does he like to feed himself?

Jack feeds himself - and in front of the TV. That's what works best over here.

Are there any foods at all that he likes to eat? Maybe give us a list of what he likes and we can try to come up with something! Chat Icon

the ped didnt seem too worried as he has never been out of the 10th percentile for weight his whole life Chat Icon

he said that he is growing on his own curve but to try to encourage him to eat more ....

things he likes are pasta ,mac and cheese ,chicken fries and only the fries not nuggets or tenders Chat Icon

nutragrain bars and bagels and pretty much most fruits but he spits out grapes and apples and absolutly no veggies

and pizza sometimes with garlic knots and that is it !!!

so you can see how mealtimes can be frustrating he wont even eat a grilled cheese with some chips
im at a loss

My DD is going for her appt next week and I anticipate that she will be right around there. She just does not like to eat. Also, she has a very small frame (it runs in the family) so I feel like naturally her bones just weigh less but regardless she is not a good eater.

Taylor has her 2 yr appt in March, but I have a feeling I will be able to write this exact same post after the appointment.

The ped. hasn't been concerned about her growth because she has always been in the 5th percentile and she is growing well on her own curve (she was born at 6 lbs.

I try not to let people's comments get to me...I have heard it all

does he drink a lot of milk? I would put some pediasure in his milk, it has a lot of calories. when I was younger I was very underweight and put on ensure

Matty was 35 1/2 inches and 26 lbs.... not quite as thin but he is in the 25th percentile. DH was skinny and I was petite too.....I try and get him to eat more but its a losing battle really.

As long as what he DOES eat is nutritious then that is really all that matters- he won't let himself starve and your DS is tall so he IS growing! Chat Icon Chat Icon

ok my DD was never a big eater, still isnt and she is 3. She has ALWAYS been in the 5th percentile since 9 months old and still is as a 3yr old. She is 3 and only weighs 27lbs and DS is 13 month weight 17 lbs, but HE EATS.

The dr said i just have small petite kids Plus both of them are So active they burn everything off...so no worries, if your dr was concerned he would have taken whatever steps needed. THe dr always tells me that its good that DD is on the chart, DS last dr visit he was LESS then the 5th percentile and they still werent even worried about it. as long as they arent Loosing weight, its ok...i think there are more picky eaters our there then kids to eat alot.
Chat Icon its frustrating but its how they are developing. kids will eat when they are hungry!

DD was only 23 1/2 lbs at her 2 year visit. My ped said there was absolutely no concern because she has always been constant in her growth and on the light side.

Awww, but his handsomeness makes up for it. Chat Icon As long as the ped. is okay with it, then he is just growing at his own rate! He will catch up at some point. DD has always been in the 25th percentile and the ped. is always okay with it. Don't worry! Chat Icon

Since he doesn't eat much I would introduce something like Pediasure or Carnation Instant Breakfast for him to drink. It will add calories to his diet and help him gain.

..and I think the Pediasure may have iron.

Yes, they just need a letter of medical necessity. I should probably do that with DS since the doctor recommended the supplemental drinks since he's very underweight. Recently I found at a medical supply store online 375 calorie ready to drink carnation, which he likes better than all that we've tried, and it's not cheap since he drinks two a day.

Ella is 2.5yrs old, and 24lbs. I think she wasn't even on the charts at 2.

She's petite, I'm not worried. I give her pediasure on days when I think she could use some more calories. But she's growing and thriving.

(her brother is 7months, and already weighs more than she did at a year old).

Re: I think i may just have the lightest 2 year old out there ....

My DD was 24 lbs at her 2 year appointment. She isn't a big eater either but I just think that she is going to be long and lanky. She's 27 months now and I think she is 25 lbs.

I guess my only recommendation is not to give up. My DD loves her fruits & veggies---it's everything else that she is iffy on. I keep trying with the meats though; hopefully one day, she'll take to it.

Does you DS eat yogurt or the drinkable yogurts? What about if you made him a shake with a touch of fruit in it? Have you tried that cookbook, "Deceptively Delicious?" There are some great meal ideas in there that integrate pureed veggies---mac n cheese, chicken nuggets, etc.

My niece is 2 and 1/2 and weighs 22 lbs. Same as my 19 month old son. Dont worry about it. Unless she is DROPPING weight, low weight my Ped's have all said is better then overweight.

DDs cousin was always a tiny thing...still is at 4 (can wear 2T capris)...was always in the negatives of the percentile charts...

She wasn't a good eater...still isn't...and ALWAYS on the go (she was crawling at 5 months, walking at 9 months and hasn't stopped since)...

And you know what...she's a very healthy and happy little girl!!!!!!!
