** I want to open a day care in my home ...
I am a certified special ed/elementary ed. teacher and feel that in the future, I would really enjoy having a day care program in my home. I of course will contact the nassau county childcare council and find out the requirements but I was wondering if anyone could offer me some advice.
1) My house is a split. The main floor has a living room/kitchen and dining room. But, I have a downstairs with a family room/additional kitchen/bathroom (where I would like to have my day care). This area has a separate entrance to the backyard. Would this be a legit location to have the children?
2) We also have a basement. It has much more space. I want to have it professionally done so its all up to code, its bright with many windows AND a fill size door that leads to the backyard. Is this an option as well?
3) If you bring your child to a day care at someones home what is the going rate (if you do not mind me asking)
4) If you run and at home day care what advice can you offer me? Anything would be greatly appreciated!! Thank you everyone!!!

Re: ** I want to open a day care in my home ...
I am currently looking for a person to take DS when I go back to work. The person I found so far who is doing it in her house is charging $175 a week. I drop him off at 7 a.m and pick him up at 4:15-4:30. It's not a day care she would only be taking care of my baby. I don't know if that gives you a ballpark figure.

my babysitter charges $5 an hour (no pay for time that DS is not there) she watches 2 other kids, some days 4 other kids.
As far as the 2 locations in your home, I think anything with access outside is what you will need.

1) I think it is a great location!
2) I would think so since it has a door leading outside, but you would have to check.
3) We will be paying $50 per day. We don't have to pay for days he doesn't show up, but if we take him out early, we still pay $50.
Good Luck!

I work for a state agency and you must understand that running a legit program out of your house is not as easy as it seems and will subject you to lots of strict regulations and responsibilites. With that said, here is a link that you may find helpful...info

Yes, I am aware. I am in the very beginning stages and am planning on implementing this in approx. a year from now. I have visited that website but I have not found particular information about using the lower level of my house as part of the facility. Thank you for your help.

there may be certain town restrictions and codes that you need to follow with the town that may prohibit you from complying with the regulations needed for an in home daycare... Good luck to you!!!

Re: ** I want to open a day care in my home ...
I am a NYS registered family provider (since 2003) in Suffolk....As PP mentioned theres quite a process involved with opening an in home daycare....Mine is located in my basement and is completely self contained, with multiple means of egress ( my windows are 3x4') and I have an outside entrance as well...The fire marshall will come to look over your layout to let you know if there are any structural changes that need to be made to meet state regulations...You may also use the main floors of your home, however I personally would find it to be slightly more difficult because your home needs to be "daycare ready" at all times, hence why I chose to keep it seperate from my living area....Good Luck
ETA- Space will also be considered depending on whether you plan on opening a family daycare or a "group" family daycare...
