I want to tear my hair out!!

Hi all,

I'm looking for a little help. My husband and I bought a house in S. Bellmore in 2011. Shortly after we flooded 2x in a year. Now, we've been here for 5 years and we have 2 kids. We need to move. I swear we have PTSD from all that we went through here. So, we started looking in Bethpage, Wantagh, Massapequa and Seaford. Now, the problem is that someone told me about the Bethpage Toxic Plume, which is apparently traveling, from Bethpage, southeast affecting all of the areas that we were looking in.

I DO NOT want to move from one nightmare to another. There are tons of articles about the toxins affecting the water in those areas and the elevated cancer rates.

What would you do? Scratch you original idea of moving to one of those 4 towns? If so - where would you look? I work in Baldwin and my husband works in Hauppauge. So we want a town somewhat between the two jobs. We can spend a max of $535,000 and we are looking for a nice community feeling, a walkable town with a good-great school district. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

How is your house now? Is there anything you could do to your current house to decrease the chance of flooding? I also live in S. Bellmore and haven't experienced flooding personally, but it's obviously a risk here.

Re: I want to tear my hair out!!

My house is great now. The 1st floor is beautiful...totally new. I can't stay here. I have had to evacuate twice already. (Before I had my girls). The thought of having to evacuate with my 2 daughters and cat makes my sick. The thought of my house being damaged again or any of my daughters things damaged, I can't handle that. It's time to go.

Maybe I can help. I'm based in N. Bellmore, and I'm very familiar with all of the areas you've mentioned. I've sold listings in S. Bellmore (I just closed a sale on Lefferts Pl. a month or so ago), and I'm also familiar with the areas you are considering.

I think everyone has to do their own research on the plume issue and get to their own comfort level. But I think Wantagh, N. Bellmore, N. Merrick would be areas you can consider that are not affected, but are similar (in terms of house prices, demographics, community, etc.) to areas like Bethpage, Massapequa, Plainedge, etc. that may be more of a concern.

I'd be happy to set up a consultation with you to discuss the selling process, give you an idea of the value of your home, and brainstorm about other areas you may consider for your more. I can answer any questions you may have, so at least you can weigh your options from a fully informed standpoint.

Feel free to contact me via FM or directly at [email protected] or 516-587-7618.
