I LOATHE Disney.

LOATHE LOATHE LOATHE.

I NEVER want to have to go back there, yet, I fear I will deprive my child.

I also HATE chuck e. Cheese, funtime USA, and anything like that.

I DO love ice skating, roller skating, hiking, clowns, pin the tail on the donkey, REAL pizza, arcades, and horse back riding....

maybe I do have some redeeming qualities

Re: I was just reminded of another reason I will most likely be a terrible mother

i went to disney world once as a kid--it was nice but i don't want to become a "Disney" mom or anything over it. my SIL is one of those and everything has to have mickey & minnie on it. Chat Icon

i never once went to chuck e cheese or discovery zone or any of that stuff as a child.

my mom never understood the point of paying all that money for us to eat crap food and play games - when she could toss us a bat, baseball glove, and softball and we'd entertain ourselves for hours. lol

nothing wrong with everything you just said - thats still pretty fun for kids.

i take my niece & nephew to chuck e. cheese once in a blue moon if my brother asks me too..and all i can say about that place -- is that i'm glad they serve beer now. Chat Icon

I am with you.
I LOATHE Disney and Chuck E Cheese too.

And like you I don't mind a good old fashioned party at McD's, roller skating, bowling, etc.
Because those are things I can enjoy as well!! Chat Icon

ETA- some of our best b-day parties growing up were at home in the backyard with fun games or arts and crafts etc.
Things have gotten so out of control these days!

I am very anti-Disney, McDonald's, stuffed animals, cartoons, etc.

I would totally be no fun, unless the kids liked arts & crafts, camping, and bowling parties.

No love for the defrosted pizza square? Chat Icon They are kinda gross, but I have a nostaligic softspot for them, from my roller-rink days.

Re: I was just reminded of another reason I will most likely be a terrible mother

it's really this...

I loathe Disney WORLD b/c I had a TERRIBLE family vacation there as a teen. it was awful and I never want to relive it.

I also don't like that they basically STOLE german folklore and made a shitload of money from it...even though Sleeping Beauty is still one of my favorite movies (and when I Germany I actually went to her purportedly REAL castle Chat Icon )

but i went to Disney Land as an adult and enjoyed that more...it was smaller and more like an amusement park, which is right up my alley.

as for all those party places...I HATE that they rake parents over the coals for the service they provide.

the places I have been to were poorly run, busy as all hell...with different parties running around, and then you have to cram 27 activities in 2 hours, so you barely pick up a crayon and it's time to go to button making already.

and there are kids from other parties...that can get unruly, and then cause a danger to other children. recipe for distaster.

I had to rip a bunch of BIG kids out of slide at FunTIme USA b/c they climbed in both directions when my 3-year-old niece was in there...getting clobbered...and the tube was NOT see through. I couldn't see her. I almost lost my mind.

I just want to throw my .02 in here, and NOT as a parent.

My parents LOATHE Disney as well, we never went when I was a child, ever. We took vacations every year, but never to places like Disney, Kings Dominion or anything like that. We went to San Diego, Cayman Islands, St. Croix. I never even went on a roller coaster at all until I was 17 and on my senior trip!

My father ESPECIALLY hates Disney and everything that they stood for.

We went to Broadway shows, out to dinner and did everything my parents did--and I hope I am raising my son the same way.

And they are awesome parents, amazing, amazing parents. And I will be honest here, just b/c you don't feel like you fit the typical mold of a parent (as mine did not) doesn't mean you'd make a bad oneChat Icon

That's why when you live in a city like NY, you have the opportunity to bring your kid to some fantastic places. My son went to a Basquiat exhibit with me at the Brooklyn Museum when he was 3, COUNTLESS trips to the Hall of Science and Museum of Natural History... The Yard in Brooklyn (yummy house music) and PS1 in the summertime =) a huge house party in Ft. Greene park 1st of every month in the summer (more house music)

It must be hard when you live in east bumblef*ck... though I have to admit, I do get off on the joy in my son's face when I bring him to these play places...

ETA:

a GIANT pillow fight in Union Square and a GIANT water gun fight in Central Park as well as numerous Cancer walks etc where he can get tons of free stuff Chat Icon

I love Disney! If/when I have children, we will have a vacation or two there. BUT, I will not be a Disney mom with all the character stuff - just not my style.

Totally agree about chuck e cheese and the other places - they are 100% hell on earth. Overpriced, bad food, chaotic - just all around hideous!!!

Much rather take children to a museum or child-friendly show. Something everyone can enjoy.

Re: I was just reminded of another reason I will most likely be a terrible mother

I think kids can live wonderfully fulfilled lives without ever going to Disney, but if you're really thinking they'd might like to go someday and you still can't stand it at that point, will they have grandparents or aunts & uncles or godparents, etc. who'd want to take them instead of you? OR you could look at it as an opportunity to create good memories there, to counter your bad ones.

I hate Chuck E Cheese too. But I wasn't allowed to have parties at places like that when I was a kid - too expensive, and likely too annoying for my parents - and I turned out OK!

see, I think that stuff is cool.

but my fear is that when they go to school, or friends parties and stuff and then I will be the bad mom that doesn't let them have their party someplace or won't go to Disney.

I guess, I just want me kids to love their life. and I want the things I WANT to show them to be things that they'll like...and not have them sad b/c of the things we don't do.

I had the worst bday parties out of all of my friends, b/c we were so poor.

irrational fears...just things that stay with you I guess.

Re: I was just reminded of another reason I will most likely be a terrible mother

My parents did take us to Disney once or twice when we were growing up and we did enjoy it. But my parents took us on a lot of great trips...many much more memorable than Disney. My parents didn't feel the need to take us on these child-friendly vacations only. We went to places including Italy, Germany, Mexico the Domincan Republic. It was great!

My parents weren't about to let a bunch of kids 'ruin' the vacations that THEY wanted to take. Chat Icon That being said, I don't think taking your kids (or not taking your kids) to Disney/Sesame Pl/Chuck E Cheese is what makes or breaks you in the parenting department.

Re: I was just reminded of another reason I will most likely be a terrible mother

I like Disney, although I haven't been since college so after my trip the end of April, Icould change my mind.

Chuck E Cheese on the other hand? Forget it. Not in a million years. DH and I always said if we ever got to have a child there would be no Barney and no Chuck E Cheese.

When I was a kid we had bowling or rollerskating parties, or the party was at home.

And I'm 50/50 about clowns. I do like going to the circus and didn't used to have a problem with clowns until I read It from Stephen King.
