Ice breaker activities
Does anyone have any sort of activity to break the ice on the 1st day and get to know their students?
I usually have them answer questions about their summers, hobbies etc on index cards, but that feels so blah (after 9 years of doing it).
TIA!!!

Re: Ice breaker activities
I have the students line up in the back (or front) of the room and give them a minute to put themselves in alphabetical order by first name, then another minute by last name, then I do birthdate (I teach language, so I do this in the target language).
In the past I have made a "Find someone who..." game and that worked really well also.
A colleague passes around a roll of toilet paper and tells the kids to take as many sheets as they want. For every sheet, they have to say one thing about themselves. He used to use candy but we aren't supposed to use candy anymore so he changed to TP!

Re: Ice breaker activities
I give them a sheet that says, "Find someone who..." Then there are boxes that have phrases in them like went to hershey park this summer, has a birthday in april. They have to go around the room (all at the same time) and find someone who has done that item. That person has to sign it and they can't have the same person sign more than once on the same sheet. There are 16 boxes. I teach 6th grade and they LOVE it. I also allow myself to be included, so it breaks the ice with me as well.

Re: Ice breaker activities
I got a lot of ideas from this website this year:
Laura Candler
I liked the classmates mix, name toss and it has a good people bingo board- the people bingo is good for teaching and practicing your "give me your attention" signal, as they are up and moving around, talking, etc....

I do this on a Bingo sheet and then we play name bingo after the sheets are filled in. (I put the job chart names face down and keep picking names until someone wins.)

Re: Ice breaker activities
3 truths and a lie can be fun! They each have to write down 3 truths and one lie about themselves, and everyone has to guess which one is a lie.
