Re: Iceland Volcano

so crazy...but I do remember the story about the plane near indonesia. The engines would fail, so the pilot was able to get the plane below 10K feet and the enines started again. They realized it was b/c of volcanic ash.

There's hope that Ireland opened airports. and I heard Paris too. Could you fly to paris and take the chunnel?

Really big news here too. I hope you're able to get to London. Can you take the Eurostar to Paris then grab the chunnel if planes are still grounded?

The Eurostar is pretty booked and it would cost us more money. Chat Icon . It's a short weekend trip, so the 6 hours it takes to get there is kind of a waste. I was going early Friday morning and leaving late Sunday night. I just don't think the time would be worth it, you know?

I'm kind of bummed b/c DH's firm is putting him up in a hotel and he gets a food allowance per day, so this was kind of like a free trip for us.

DH had to go this morning b/c it was for a special 2 week training course that isn't available for the rest of the year. He needs the course to keep his job over here.

So he got up early this morning and left Frankfurt for Belgium, Oostende. By sheer luck, he got one of the last places on the ferry to England.

Its all over the news here....its really screwing up everything. The newspapers are saying that we could run out of fresh fruit and veg in a week or so, I can definitely see that the supply in the supermarkets is already quite low. I hope the weather changes soon, because apparently its the wind patterns that are making this so severe!

Good luck with your trip to London, you can try the Eurostar, they are saying that there is a HUGE surge of foot traffic on the ferries and the availability of the Eurostar is crazy busy at the moment!

Re: Iceland Volcano

I have been working for three days straight trying to get people home from Paris who were there for a meeting I am managing.

I can tell you this - London Heathrow will most likely not reopen for another 3-4 days. Paris as well.

There is small talk for the airspace to start to open tomorrow however there will be limited flights that are all more than over booked.

Trains, boats, and rental cars are immpossible to come by.

Another thing you may want to keep in mind is this ash is extremely dangerous. Even if space opens there is chances of it reclosing at any given minute due to the fact that there is still a lot of activity with the volcano.

I am holding flights daily for mulitple people and we just keep waiting for the first one they can get on.

My uncle is stuck in Germany and the first confirmed flight he can get is next saturday.

It is a HUGE mess.

If you need more info please let me know. It is my job to watch this thing like a hawk since I have people flying all over the world.

Re: Iceland Volcano

I feel very bad for people who had/have major travel plans that are on hold or canceled, especially those stuck in airports in a foreign country because they can't get home. And what about people honeymooning in those areas too? I wonder if anyone on LIW has had their honeymoon canceled.

But is anyone else fascinated by this like I am? Mother Nature laughing in the face of technology? That for all our advancements, every once in a while we get a reminder that we are completely at the mercy of the planet we live upon?

Re: Iceland Volcano

My BIL had to get from Ireland back to Poland and it was a disaster. He took all means of transport and I believe it took him 3 days of travel, 48 hours of it, in a carChat Icon And to make matters worse, they were burying their president. I heard travel was horrendous over there.
