Re: Ideas - WELCOME
I have a pretty open floor plan. I just used colors that complimented each other.
Just after painting....
You can see the gold running across the top...

Re: Ideas - WELCOME
If you're concerned about too much color what about picking 2 different colors from the same color strip? Maybe the dark color on the one wall that connects the two rooms and one of the lighter colors on the other two walls.

Re: Ideas - WELCOME
You could always put some molding up as a divider and then paint complimentary colors.

I would definitely do this. But colors within the same family, not 2 opposite colors.

Re: Ideas - WELCOME
If you want to pick complementary colors you can look at a color wheel to get ideas(google it) I have also found pieces of fabric I like and pulled colors from there Right now i have a blanket that has dark brown, teal and beige and that will be my den's color theme when I re-do it. My MIL has the same situation and she put a strip of decorative molding down the wall. Not crazy about the look but its an idea. Another thing you can do is build a valance for the sliding door out of wood so it goes up to the ceiling then you can paint one side one color and the den/kitchen another color. FM me if you need a pic. We have this in our house.
Forget the valance I just looked ta the pic and you have high ceilings so that won't work.

What about having the fireplace wall as the only wall with a different color - making it an "accent wall"? That might be nice and you could probably do a pretty bold color on that wall too.

Re: Ideas - WELCOME
You paint vertical stripes in the den, then continue into the kitchen with one of those colors... Or paint one color, but add wainscotting or bead board to the den.

Re: Ideas - WELCOME
i was just going to suggest maybe getting a mirror from ceiling to floor OR a skinny shelf that goes to the ceiling.....
anything really, that can act as a divider.
have that be the cut off of th kitchen and the start of the den.
then you cant see the line of paint.
OR what anohter poster said, just get a piece of moling to separate the two.

I like this idea also. Maybe you could do a nice red against your fireplace and do the other walls a beige?

Re: Ideas - WELCOME
I like the molding idea
put up a piece of nice white molding to divide the rooms, then you will have more options for color

Re: Ideas - WELCOME
Chris, I was getting ready to take pictures this morning when I realized that my floor plan, while open, has a tiny bit of a wall "arch" (don't know if it's called something else) "breaking" the 2 rooms. It has moulding around it. Also, the LR has chair rail throughout, so that breaks the eye.
Let me know if you still want pics.

I would add two columns to divide the rooms yet keep them open. Have fun picking colors!

Re: Ideas - WELCOME
i definitely feel your pain!!!
We had the same problem. We had one huge room that was the kitchen and what we made the dining room. So it was hard to find a color to paint the whole room (especially the kitchen because supposedly there are colors that a kitchen shouldn't be ).
We ended up spending tons of $$ on samples and testing out different colors. We ultimately went with a very pale green (that almost looks grey depending on the light sometimes).
I will say that we decided to do one color because... if you do two, than you break up the room and it looks smaller than it is. We wanted the room to look very spacious.
Good luck!
