Identity Theft Related Question - What Should I Do?
So on Friday afternoon, I get an automated message from the school board I work for saying that a student at my school hacked into employee records and has our names, addresses, phone numbers, socials, etc. They said he is "cooperating with police."
Now - I'm really pizzed that our frigging principal didn't tell us anything and that's another story. I will be emailing the union head tomorrow, as I sure many will be, to find out exactly what info this person(s) has and what is being done.
What should I do? Or what should we as a faculty be demanding? Should we be asking that they pay for one of those identity theft watch programs for each of us? Should I just be checking my accounts religiously? I don't know exactly what they got yet, but I'm figuring if they have socials and birthdates, they could open credit cards?
Please tell me what you think!
Thanks!

Re: Identity Theft Related Question - What Should I Do?
I would think that they should be paying a few months worth of identity theft program. THis happened to us when we were banking at North fork bank. THe bank paid for i think like 6 months of the identity theft program through the 3 major credit beureas, experian, transunion and exuifax. THis way they have it on alert about what happened and your credit is being monitored. Good Luck

Re: Identity Theft Related Question - What Should I Do?
Something similar happened to a friend of mine and the company they worked for paid for credit monitoring for all employees for 1 year. I would also notify your bank, credit cards, and even credit bureaus on your own. It's better to be safe than sorry.

My first thought was make them pay for an identity theft service

How do I officially notify the credit bureaus? Just call them?
Found out it wasn't just my school - was entire human resources info for my school board - that's almost 37,000 employees!!!!!!

Yes, you can call one credit bureau and put a freud alert on it for 90 days. They contact the other 2 for you.

Go to each one's website and see how to put an emergency fraud warning on your report. Typically require a fax which includes a letter stating you want to "freeze" your credit report and a photocopy of your drivers license to prove who you are.

They should definitely pay for credit monitoring. This happened to DH- someone hacked into his job's personell files. The company paid for 2 years of credit monitoring.
So sorry Miki!

Re: Identity Theft Related Question - What Should I Do?
They should be paying for the id theft watch without a doubt. They also should be telling you what information they got, maybe not on an individual basis but most def blanket it, so that everyone is aware of the situation. HTH
