If a breeder is "AKC" does that mean they're reputable?
We found a Boston Terrier breeder on the internet and the the pups are AKC. The pups are a little less expensive than others that we found ($600 vs $900+).
Would they be a reputable breeder? What questions should we ask? We got Katie at 7, so we're kind of clueless.

If they are AKC I would ask to see any papers that prove that. Anyone can say they are AKC, KWIM?
PS... can you FM the info you found... we're always on the lookout for BT Breeders

I would check with the AKC to make sure they really are AKC.

Go to the AKC website and check their list of recommended breeders. Any dog registered with the AKC is from an AKC breeder, that doesn't mean that they are recommended or a better breeder. You can buy a dog in a pet store that is AKC registered...it means nothing unless the AKC recommends them as a reputable breeder.

This is what we did just to make sure the breeder we used were certified. Our breeder also gave us references in which we checked out and found that everyone we contacted loved the breeder. As others stated also ask for the paperwork they received from AKC to look over.
Good luck!!!

Re: If a breeder is "AKC" does that mean they're reputable?
We used a breeder that was AKC registered, but the things to look for are:
1) That they breed only 1 breed of dog. 2) See if they welcome you to the home. 3) Ask how many litters a year they have. 4) Where are the dogs kept?
Also ask about health guarantees and pedigree.
We interviewed many breeders and we loved ours. She shipped our dog from Ohio. She invited us to go pick him up and spend the weekend. But we chose the shipping. She had only 7 dogs. They were kept in her finished basement, in her home, socialized. She worked with another Bullmastiff breeder in Ohio. They stud their dogs out to one another. I actually recently looked up her website and it was down and I got concerned. I called her and she said she retired her dogs because they each had a couple of litters already. So she is letting them live out their lives and meanwhile she still has her hairdressing profession wich she does out of her home also.
