If a couple eloped, and her mother threw her a shower

after they came home-is that tacky?

They got cards when they came home from immediate family

Yeah - I think its a little tacky. Why not have an engagement party too Chat Icon

I think what is less tacky is a 'celebration' celebrating their marriage.

Or if they need things for a new home why not just have a house warming?

Re: If a couple eloped, and her mother threw her a shower

well, she has no intentions of having a big wedding ever.

they eloped, she came back, my mother(her aunt) arranged for the grandmother, aunts, girl cousins on her side to meet at a restaurant when they came home and we gave cards. I gave my normal rate, since it is my cousin, I did not care about the party. Everyone paid for their own dish, was very improptu, and we would have invited the groom's side, but they were livid that they ran off.

So now, a year later, she brought up to me how her mother never threw her a shower. I mean I would go to one, but she is my best friend, so what is a couple of pots to me....but I think if others get the invite, they will be like W T F? hehe...

No house in their future for the next couple of years, if that.

Re: If a couple eloped, and her mother threw her a shower

I think I would be the way you said....like "W T F???"

A year later its just not appropriate to have a shower.

Would you have a baby shower after the baby was a year old?

Would you have a bachelorette party a year after the wedding?

Or a Sweet 16 party when the kid turns 17?

I think its tacky. If you want a shower, then you don't run off and elope. I think there is nothing wrong with celebrating the marriage, but a bridal shower for a wife (not a bride) is just silly.

ETA: ESPECIALLY after a year. Now that's just absurd. You had your chance, you missed it, move on.

Re: If a couple eloped, and her mother threw her a shower

I totally hear you, that is what I think. I don't know where she is coming up with this. Do you think a month after they came home that would have been more accepted or no? I still don't think so.

Well, she is starting to boycott showers now, since she did not have one. nutty

I'm sorry- but that sounds like a silly response to a choice SHE made to run off and get married.

I say: she should wait until she has a house and then she could have a housewarming party.

I had a bridal shower, so when we buy a house, we dont' really need a housewarming party. I'm sure we'll invite people over for a BBQ, but it's definitely not going to be a housewarming party.

but, she definitely missed the boad on a bridal shower

Yeah, I had a shower and I thought a housewarming would have been a bit much, since it was not long after the wedding.

If it was right after the elopement, I would have said why not? But a year later?Chat Icon

A year later? That seems tacky, ridiculous, and such a blatant ploy for presents.

Re: If a couple eloped, and her mother threw her a shower

I think its tacky. We had sent out invitations to my shower and then when decided to push it back a year we sent out little notes saying we were postponing....i DID NOT want a shower a year before my wedding I felt it was to big of a time gap nad people would be like W T F she had a shower then rescheduled her wedding

I agree 100%

After all my Sweet 16 was cancelled... don't askChat Icon Using your cousin's logic... let's see, I'll be 35 on October 1st... I'll turn it into a Sweet 16 party since I never had one... all of you are invited to the Knights of Columbis Hall, everyone will wear a formal dress and I'll make sure to invite a lot of cute boys.
We'll all put our pocketbooks in the middle of the floor and dance in a circleChat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: If a couple eloped, and her mother threw her a shower

I think if were immediately after they came home, and her mom threw it because she didn't know about the wedding in advance, I wouldn't find it so tacky. I also think a post-wedding party/celebration, rather than a shower, would be more appropriate.

Now that it is a year later, it would be tacky. And I agree with some of the others here, that if you are going to elope, you can't expect people to do all the things they normally do for weddings. Unfortunately, you have to suffer through the planning to reap the benefits Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon
