If baby falls asleep during feeding and leaves a lot of formula...
Do you let him eat early next time?
He will SCREAM if he's hungry and we don't give him a bottle right away.
Do we stick to the schedule or let him eat earlier since he only had 2.5 oz of his 4oz bottle?

yeah i make him finish. i tickle his feet, move him, change a diaper, remove an article of clothing...whatever. but i like to make sure he eats everything. it helps with sticking to a schedule and it's easier to keep track of how much you feed him in a day vs. having to document it.

If I couldn't keep them awake, yes I'd feed them earlier next time if they wanted. I basically fed on demand for the first few months.

At such a young age a fed on demand when necessary. If he is hungry I'd feed hoi and forget the clock. If its happening often you made need to move up the nipple size. With DD I had to switch nipples at about 2.5 mos old. If they have to work too hard it tires them out and they fall asleep.

Re: If baby falls asleep during feeding and leaves a lot of formula...
My DD is notorious for falling asleep at EVERY BOTTLE and breastfeeding when she was a couple of weeks old. Even to this day, she still falls asleep sometimes. I used to strip her down to just a diaper and put her close to my body. It's the summer so I'm not too worried about her being freezing. If that fails, I would tickle her hands and feet. I only do it until I see that the milk is literally flowing out of her mouth and she no longer has the energy to drink or she starts to choke since she's falling into deep sleep. I've tried letting her sleep and not finish the bottle but then she'll wake up in 1.5 hours screaming her head off because she's so hungry!

At that age, I'd try everything to keep LO awake to eat, but I also fed on demand. No schedules that early.

Re: If baby falls asleep during feeding and leaves a lot of formula...
BTW- if he's screaming to eat, you are waiting too long to feed. As soon as he starts showing signs of hunger (chewing/sucking hands, rooting around), feed him. Believe me, the less reason you give him reason to cry, the happier you will be. They're little chow machines in the beginning, but over time the feedings will fall into a more decipherable schedule. At this point, trying to schedule him is only going to frustrate you. Follow his cues and you'll get a schedule much more quickly.
ETA: You're doing a GREAT job Momma. The first 2 months are HARD.

I do the same, I EBF, so sometimes she falls asleep. At 2 weeks I tried to wake her, but if it didn't work I just fed her when she seemed hungry next. I didn't wait a certain amount of hours etc.

Re: If baby falls asleep during feeding and leaves a lot of formula...
just keep in mind breast milk is different than formula. Breast milk digests more easily / quickly...so thats why Bfing is recommended to be done on demand. but for formula i was told by hospital, pediatrician and the charts that enfamil and similac put out to feed every 3-4 hours. but when he was just born til i think it was the second week it was every 2-3 hours...but 2-3 oz instead of 3-4

I think there are many different schools of thought on this. Truth of the matter is: NB generally DON'T follow anyone's schedule but their own and they are notorious for their LACK of a schedule at first. The BTDT moms are speaking from experience. Generally at that age, follwoing the baby's cues rather than the clock is going to bode better.
I'd always assumed the 3-4 hours was a minimum for NBs, not a requirement. A NB should never go more than 3-4 hours, but most definitely can be fed more often if they need it. If a baby is crying to eat after say, an 1.5, they're hungry and should be fed, formula or not. Keep in mind, her baby is a big boy (wasn't he born over 9lbs?) and is going to need to eat more than a 7 pounder might, KWIM?
Either way, it's advice meant to help the OP.

yeah, she does have a big boy so i'm sure he can eat more or more often...my only concern with the advice given is over-feeding. people told me to let DS take the lead and follow his cues and just feed him and he'd let me know when he had enough to eat. well...those cues never happened...this kid could have just eaten me out of house and home...no matter how full his belly was...he showed all the signs of still being hungry! then after he would cry and cry...turned out it was belly ache...and he was constipated...we were told we were feeding him too much.

Re: If baby falls asleep during feeding and leaves a lot of formula...
oh...i forgot to mention...i mostly bottle feed bc my supply is way low...but if he seems hungry and it's not time for his bottle yet...sometimes i'll give the boob as a "snack" but in my case I can barely pump and ounce so I don't worry about him being overfed.

Thank you...
Yesterday was just messed up because my parents watched him for a few hours and let him "graze" for almost 2 hours! I told them last time they watched him that feeding should ONLY last a half hour - MAX. And to do everything possible to keep him awake. BUT... they either forgot that tidbit or ignored it. They said they couldn't wake him up for anything, but I don't think they tried hard enough, IMO. Soooooo... DH and I were left figuring out WHEN the baby was supposed to eat the rest of the day.
The funny thing is, I think our baby has a watch that goes off ON THE MINUTE he's supposed to eat. It's uncanny. Yesterday, he ate at 3:23, 6:23, 9:23, 12:23... no joke. Opened his eyes and started doing the mouthing movements and sucking his hand RIGHT ON TIME. BUT... after that 12:23 feeding - when my parents fed him for almost TWO HOURS, we were thrown off. At least when he was on that 3 hours consistent schedule, I knew when to have the bottle ready. After that, he would wake up already screaming WAY off schedule and we still had to get the good ready and warmed.
He is a big baby - 10lbs now! And he gained weight perfectly at his last appt. I'm still pumping, but I'm not giving him the breast milk because I'm waiting for the antibiotic I was on to leave my system completely since the doc said it could be contributing to his gas pains. What a waste!! Otherwise, I would try to put him to my breast, but he flips out when he doesn't get the milk immediately so I don't think that would exactly calm him down.
Thanks for all the advice!
