DS goes to daycare but I don't bother labeling his clothes unless they are items that's not always on him - ie. jackets, hats, bibs, etc. There are just too many pieces of clothes to label!
I got labels from namebubbles.com. They're cute and works well.

My MIL just wrote in black marker on the tags or her hat, coat and gloves.

I have been using Mabel's Labels for almost 4 years. I use the tag mates for clothing and the skinny labels for everything else.

just the outer layers (jackets, shoes, boots, hats, gloves, etc) The things that get taken off during the day
I use
Mabel labels!
ETA: I also used the sippy cup labels from them..and they stayed on all year going in the dishwasher a number of times each week!

I have a sharpie right at my door on the ledge that my keys are on and I put her intiials on her sweat shirts as we walk out the door!
