If I send Ava to Kindergarten at a private school, does my district still have to give her services?
Just wanted to know, for next year.
Thanks, Tara

Yes they do, but they don't have to give them to her at the private school. I don't know of anyone locally that has done this, but in other states the child is bussed to the homeschool for their services and bussed back, or the parent drives them back and forth. I'm not sure how this works in NY though, especially since K is not required here. Maybe one of the therapists that reads will know.

In the school where I work the children are brought in for services. Since we have an unusually late day, the parents typically drive their children to our school after their school day has ended.

I know a child that I was working with
in CPSE. He started Kindergarten at a
Catholic school and received speech
at a center after school paid for by the
district.

I have worked with children in private schools. The district paid for the services and I drove to the private school. I am OT and I think Vision also went to the private school. I am not sure about speech.

I am also an occupational therapist that works contract for a public school district but I do travel to private schools with in that same district to service children within their school, during the school day. I have also serviced children in private schools at the end of the school day---due to scheduling conflicts----and the parent picked the child up at the end of services.

When my sister had services (years ago) she was bused to a nearby public school for speech.

I guess there is no one answer. I worked briefly in a private school and the PT and OT came to the school

I know when my SMIL went to enroll my BIL in a Catholic school they just told her to take him to the public school since he'd be taken up there for services anyway.
But this was 8 years ago.

Same thing with us.
I was told, (by a Catholic school in my area) if Lance needed more than a little help in math/reading, then he should attend public school.
I'm not sure if Lance will need services when he starts K, but I will not be sending him there either way.
You are in W. Islip right? I'm sure you will not have a problem. Lance's teacher works with that district a lot, and says that they are great about services. I will ask her next time I talk to her.
