If you are giving a low report card grade...
do you warn the parents first?
I have three children who I feel deserve 2's in reading. 2 of these parents I speak with often, have met with to discuss kids, etc. Now, I have expressed my concerns about these children, especially about decoding and thing like that.
Now, do I give them a heads up re: their child's report card or let the chips fall?
If I give a heads up, is it verbally or written?

Re: If you are giving a low report card grade...
We have conferences with our fall report cards, so we can confer then. If I didnt have a fall conference, Id probably be in touch with the parent to let them know my concerns.
Do you conference? What grade?

Re: If you are giving a low report card grade...
If I notice that a child has had a significant decrease in their grades since their interim reports went out (halfway through the quarter), I will call the parents and give them a heads up to let them know that their child is slipping. This way, there are no surprises and no irate parents when report cards are sent home.
It's more if a CYA measure than anything else.

It usually is a good way to CYA by letting them know. This way they can't call complaining afterwards and crying that they had NO IDEA that their child was getting low grade...

Re: If you are giving a low report card grade...
I feel like I should, but I don't know if I am going to. I teach 8th grade, and I think it shouldn't come as a surprise to the parents if their child fails. They should be taking a role too, checking notebooks and agendas and asking for tests.
But I'd probably feel differently if I had younger kids. And if it was a kid who did well but is now failing, then I'd give a heads up.

Report cards go out next week and then conferences are the week after. I just made up progress reports that I will send home with the ok of my principal. I feel like it's more of denial on the parents part that their child is not up to par with the rest of the class.

Well, it is still early enough in the year that you can send it home, let the parents check it out, and then they can also contact you as they have concerns. The conferences will be a good time to answer any questions and address any concerns.

I did run it by the principal and sent them out. It was only for 3 children. I made sure that I included positives as well.

Re: If you are giving a low report card grade...
The rule of thumb in my school is that you give some notice to parents about any grade that might be a surprise. So if you've been in contact with these families and they know your concerns, then that's your heads-up. If it's a family you never talk to on a regular basis, I'd say give them the heads-up. If nothing else, you're showing you care enough to have the courtesy to pre-warn them so they're not upset when they get the report card.
