If you are not BF, what do they give you to stop milk from coming in?
I'm not going to BF, and my mother said they gave her a shot to stop the milk from coming in. Of course that was nearly 31 year ago , but do they still give you a shot in the hospital to stop the milk from coming in if you do not want to BF?

My mother was just talking about this. When she had me, they gave her some sort of medication to help with engorgement. When she had my sister 4 years later, they just told her to use ice packs. I'm pretty sure it's ice packs for us, too.

Nope. They stopped doing this decades ago. My mom got the shot for it after she had both my sister and I. But- when she had my brother in 1979, they weren't offering it anymore.
Because of that, she wound up giving BFing a whirl. So funny because she was my biggest supporter when it came to BFing.
To help dry your milk:
take Sudafed cabbage leaves in the bra bind your chest tightly/wear a tight sports bra

Re: If you are not BF, what do they give you to stop milk from coming in?
Beth, I'm not sure if anything's changed, but when I had the kids, there wasn't anything available. I BFed Christopher and Kaylee for the first couple months, but after that it took a LONG time for my milk to go away. In fact, Kaylee was about 18 months before it was FINALLY gone. I had been fed up and asked my doctor about the shot (my mom had had it too) and apparently the stopped giving it because it led to strokes or something. All you can do is ice them, avoid hot showers and wait for it to stop. Since you're not BFing at all, hopefully it won't take as long as it took for me. I think my case was a pretty extreme example anyway...lucky me

I didn't realize they stopped the shot decades ago! Ahh well, sounds like it will be cold showers! Thanks!

I read in "What to Expect..." the other day that the FDA recommends against use of the drugs to dry up the milk now because they are unreliable and can have serious side effects. The book recommends ice packs, over-the-counter pain relievers and tight, supportive bras.
HTH!

I wore tight sports bras. Honestly, nothing really even came out for me. A little trickle but that's it.

i just had my 2nd dd last week and i wore a really tight bra and took a ace bandage and wrapped myself. i had lots of ice and advil tylenol for 2 days. i did however get a 102 fever from the milk coming in...... it hurts but only last 2 days at most if you keep them tight!

Did you have a lot of swelling/engorgement before labor? I am due in 13 days, and have no swelling--I am hoping this is a sign that my milk may never come in....
