If you are out of work and do not have health insurance
coverage..are you under your spouses insurance? If that was too expensive, what affordable plans are out there? I tried assurant health, but it is not available in NY yet.

Re: If you are out of work and do not have health insurance
There's family health plus and medicaid. I think FHP may look at your previous income level though. Have you looked into COBRA?
I'd say to make sure you have continuous coverage try medicaid for a while. It does it's job until you can get re-insured.
Honestly when I was unemployed or waiting for my Ins to kick in I just went without. Had something serious happened, that would have stunk, but they can not turn you away because of lack of insurance and I know certain health systems will provide service for charity if you qualify. COBRA was just waaaay too expensive for me at the time. Had I not had another position lined up that would insure me, I would have gone on medicaid.
ETA: Sorry to hear about your job I hope you find something soon. Sending good job vibes

Re: If you are out of work and do not have health insurance
Did you look into Healthy NY .
I was out of work for a while I wasn't eligible for Healthy NY so I had a bad GHI plan. I was only covered for emergency service and it was around $400 a month .

The problem w/ healthy NY is you have to work or make under a certain amount. Also you can't have coverage in the past 12 months. I used to be on the plan and had to submit pay stubs to ensure my income and proof of insurance. Also I needed something from my employer stating that health insurance isn't offered to me.
Getting something that covers emergancies isn't necessarily a bad idea, since that's when health insurance is the most valueable. The once-in-a-while visit to the doctor for a cold does not get expensive enough to warrent a really expensive policy if you are out of work. Plus, depending on where you live, there are walk-in clinics you can go to. I know that's not the most desireable, but again the important thing is that you get care. I would look into medicaid and family health plus though. In grad school I knew a bunch of people on it and they were not working.

I just got laid off, I am on DH's insurance and he was on mine, so I'll just be on his until I get a new job.

Re: If you are out of work and do not have health insurance
My DH just got laid off- our whole family was on his policy- it's 1000/month for cobra for the 3 of us- not sure how they expect you to pay for that when YOU DON'T HAVE A JOB!!! It's so ridiculous!
