Either a change or implementing a program of some sort? If there was one major change you could make (not getting paid more Chat Icon ), what would it be? I am taking a proposal writing class and although I am a SAHM now, I was thinking back to the days I worked and couldnt think of one program that I would have liked to implement at the work place.

Does anyone have one that they would like to "pitch" to their work place?

In the past, flexible hours, participating in the transit check program & work from home days were suggested & successful.

The option of telecommuting or working from home. I wish more companies trusted employees enough to offer this option.

being able to work 4 ten hour work days instead of 5 8 hour days. it's greener and you get an extra day off Chat Icon

Re: If you could propose something at your job...what would it be?

a better procedure for measuring productivity. For example: I have to see at least 6 patients per day (30/wk). The problem is that certain classifications of visits are more extensive than others- meaning, opening a new case takes a lot of time and includes A LOT of paperwork, case management, calls, etc, whereas a revisit is fairly quick and does not involve much paperwork (generally). The issue is that you could have 10 new cases/wk (along w/ your revisits) and still fall short, despite it involving so much more work then having just 30 straight revisits for the week. A point system would make much more sense (and i'm pretty sure it has been implemented in other parts of the country), where a revisit would count as 1 point, recert or discharge would be 2 pts and start of care would be 3 points.

I don't know if this helps too much, since it's very specific to my field, but i think the issue of productivity is a more universal one. I remember in a job i had before i was a nurse, my productivity was 200% every month. It wasn't b/c i was such an amazing employee (though, i am pretty good ;) lol) but the cases i dealt with were significantly less involved that some of my coworker's were, yet they had a hard time meeting their productivity month after month.

Good luck!

The idea of summer hours. I know a lot of my friends between Memorial Day and Labor Day have the ability to alternate with other people in their departments for every other Friday off. I don't remember how they justified it hours wise, but it worked great for them and gave them something to look forward to and a reason to work hard to keep a job like that. Working from home would be another idea, but in my field that wouldn't work all the time.

The single biggest change would be the name. It's cumbersome, and most people get it wrong which in turn creates a misunderstanding about what we do, which leads to inability to fundraise (we're not-for-profit and struggle big time with this).

Replacing one of the position's that our Board feels should remain vacant. It's a part-time job for an entry level person, no benefits, so it's not a lot of money, but we used to have someone in this spot, and it was so helpful having one more person on staff.

My work is service oriented, so having adequate staffing is so important. We're really limited in terms of what we can do at the moment, especially when one person is on vacation.

introducing job-sharing. my position (and others) are VERY difficult to maintain for working mothers which means the position is usually filled by a recent masters grad (like me), who then leaves after 2-3 years to start a family. If we could job-share they wouldn't have such high turn-over because the position would be more family-friendly, and they could have someone there more hours - i.e. if both people worked 25 hour weeks they get 50 hours instead of 40.

Re: If you could propose something at your job...what would it be?

The last proposal I made was very successful. It wasn't about us getting more or doing less. It was about giving more to others - company sponsored charity events and efforts.

We did a Habitat for Humanity build, a fundraiser/family day at the Wildlife Rescue Center, sponsored two full families for the holidays, and had a food/clothing drive competition for the Salvation Army and Toys of Hope (prizes were things like dress down days).

We're expanding the efforts this year. The dress down vouchers were such a hit, that I'm going to propose an extra dress-down day a week.

401K or some sort of retirement fund

Yearly reviews

Working from home (so every time it snows and the office closes, I don't have to come in on a Saturday or use a vacation day!!)

Summer hours

Bosses who actually work a full day and help with the workload.

Re: If you could propose something at your job...what would it be?

having our paychecks state how many hours a day we worked so we would know how we are getting paid. this is a big deal for me because this is the first time in years that we actually get a statement and direct deposit.

Re: If you could propose something at your job...what would it be?

flex time
my previous job had this and it was great. you had the option to work an extra hour for 4 days a week and have a half day every friday. or off every other friday. or work an extra 2 hours each day and off every friday (this is what I did). also the option to work from home 1 day a week. this was all based on you being a productive worker of course, and any important meetings or deadline that came up came before your flex day off.

Re: If you could propose something at your job...what would it be?

Telecommuting...even if its just for snow day type situations, so that a personal day doesnt have to be used if the office is still open.

Re: If you could propose something at your job...what would it be?

Freedom to use vacation days when ever I want through the year. If I quit I'd pay them back. Accruing vacation days is just plain stupid. Our busiest time of the year is Q4 but thats when everyone's vacation is fully earned.

And let us sell back our vacation or sell to other employees. Got a new mom in your team? Want a really kick butt baby gift how about everyone gives her 2 days off?

Got a sick kid at home and have no more days, how about you buy one from your coworker instead?

etc etc etc

Otherwise, I like my new place a lot. Work from home isnt an issue for us, since we have tokens and really we don't get snow days here in tx Chat Icon commute is a breeze and you kinda expect to be expected to show up.
