If you did a gut kitchen renovation, how long did it take?

How long did it take to complete it, from demo to completion and what was the estimated duration of the renovation?

My contractor is starting demo next week and thinks we can be finished by early January. I'm optimistic but don't know how realistic this is... seems kinda short for a complete gut reno considering I'm also doing abit of exterior work like new doorway and window.

Thanks!

We did a complete gut and did all the work ourselves and we were done in a month.

Wow, that's impressive! How many worked on the project? Do you have before an after photos?

I was working from home so my dad and I worked during the week and then DH would work with up on the weekends.

We did not move walls around but we did do all new insulation, drywall plumbing and electrical.

I might have pics in my albums.

Really? It's actually not just gut renoting a kitchen but other work that includes:

- reframing
- removing parts of walls
- building a doorway
- building a landing to the backyard from new doorway
- moving the laundry area to a new location
- moving the powder room
- shifting the kitchen to the other side of the room so all new plumbing and electrical

I thought it would take 2-3 months but I guess it depends how skilled/efficient the team is...

mine was just the kitchen gut job, with electrical and plumbing work. No moving of walls or other things.

the answer is "it depends"

it depends on a lot of things but a lot on your contractor and your house.

it depends on how coordinated he is, how many people are working on your house, how consistant they are working on your house. whether he is doing the electric and plumbing or licensed trades, their availability, the inspections

Re: If you did a gut kitchen renovation, how long did it take?

DH said 2-3 months sounds exactly right

He does this for a living and this was the answer he gave when I told him. He said 3 months is on the longer end of time though

It really varies on what you are doing and problems that may come up. Our kitchen took about a month due to it was a big job. We had 500 feet of tile layed in a diagonal pattern in which we had to order more tile because a lot was wasted due to the way they cut. That took a couple extra days. The counter took about 1 1/2 weeks for measurments and putting it in. As the contractor went a long we found other stuff needed to be done.

In my last house the kitchen took 2 weeks because it was very small but add on a week for the countertop.

Re: If you did a gut kitchen renovation, how long did it take?

Around 2 months but a friend did it for us. I found that certain things hold up the job - for example, you cant order counter until cabinets are installed. If there is a delay with deciding on a counter, it can delay the whole process. I also dont like picking things out in advance. I wanted the counters installed before I picked out the backsplash so my jobs always take forever!!!!!!! My appliances also took a long time to come in.

Re: If you did a gut kitchen renovation, how long did it take?

we are at the end of ours now. hired a contractor - it's him with 1 other guy, plus an electrician/plumber when needed. we did a complete gut job, took down a wall, took out baseboard heating, moved all appliances etc. they originally told us it would take 3 weeks. but it's been about 18 days of work (so in my eyes, 3.5 weeks bc they aren't here on the weekends). they have about 5 days of work left. so, all in all 4.5 weeks. for us, it's getting dragged out a little longer bc of the upcoming holiday, plus if you are getting granite, they can't come to template for your granite until the cabinets are all installed, and then there might be a little delay where the contractor has done all he can do, until the counter is installed etc. like, for us, they templated last friday the 11th, and counter was installed this friday the 18th. so really on the 17th - the electrician was only here a few hours doing the lighting, and the 18th, the counters were installed and that was it for the day. so those 2 days weren't a FULL day's work. kwim? sorry for the long-winded response, but since we are going through it now i thought i'd try to give you as accurate of an answer as i can. but basically whatever they tell you, expect longer so you won't be disappointed or aggravated. that's what i did Chat Icon

Including demo of a wall, installation of a new load bearing header beam, building out of a new 'wall', all new walls, ceilings, electrical, light fixtures, cabinets, ripping up about 4 floors and installing all new subfloors and tiles.. and doing it all alone (my DH with sometimes help from a friend) - it's been about 7 months and counting!Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon
