We spend the summer at the bay, G will be 3 in April and I really think it might be a good idea to get him swimming lessons over the summer.

Does anyone know of any programs for 3 yr olds that I can look into?

We will be starting safety swim next month and DS is 3. I don't think my Town programs accept kids before they are 4 or 5.

Re: If you did swimming lessons for your DC, what age were they?

We started DS at around 20 months at Safe-T-Swim. He's now 3.5 years old and recently passed his Level 3. The 1st 3 levels are 'safety' lesson ---- getting to the edge of the pool, crab crawling around the edge, jumping in and swimming back to the wall, floating on your back, climbing out, etc ....

He's now at the point where he can dive in head first, swim arm over arm (freestlye?), turn over and float on his back, etc ...

It was really worth the money to be able to see what he has accomplished in 18 months.

I know for TOH, they offer swim lessons at ariound age 5ish I think. You could also check out a YMCA, I know they offer classes.

check out the YMCA they are sooo much cheaper than saf-t-swim.

you can also look for a private instructor who could teach your child at your home or at theirs. We did that with our older DD and it was great.

I started my youngest son right before he turned 3 and it has worked out nicely for us. He took to it quickly and progressed nicely. I was lucky in that he never had any fears though. He hit Level 4 in like 3 months. He takes lessons at Safety Swim in Bellmore. It has been about 6 mos now and I have been happy with the place and his performance.

DS gets lessons at SafeTSwim, we started him at just over a year and he'll be taking them until the summer (he's 18 months).
Although he isn't swimming on his own yet, he climbs out of the pool, goes underwater, kicks holding onto a barbell, etc.

Just an FYI, although lessons at the Y are cheaper per session, you have to pay a fee to use the club which ends up costing the same (at least on LI) as SafeTSwim.

Dd has been going to safety swim since she's 2 mos old, she's 20mos now. She just began swimming a bit on her own. It's so cute and a he's so proud of herself. She absolutely loves the water and is totally with the money. Especially in my situ wher dh doesn't swim. I know ou town pool offers lessons too but just in the summer and they begin at 6 mos.

Re: If you did swimming lessons for your DC, what age were they?

Can DH do a mommy and me swim class at safety swim or the y? DH grew up on his boat, we live on the water, and swimming is in his blood. He would LOVE to take classes with DS. His birthday is next week and I think it would be a nice surprise if I went in with MIL and my mom and got him some classes.

Is this allowed? How do classes work, do you pay per class or per group of classes?

Re: If you did swimming lessons for your DC, what age were they?

I used to work for Safe T swim. I started teaching DD at 3 months in my own pool. RIght now she can float on her back, kick while moving her hands ( doggie paddle ) If I push her in she will turn around and grab for the side instantly. Blows bubbles and she is just starting to learn how to turn her head to the side and breath after putting her face in while kicking.

When I worked at Safe T swim I had a 2.5 year old swimming free style half way across the pool. It can be done. Don't ever think its too early.

It's important for children to learn that they must hold your hand around the pool area. Never let them get in on there own. Walk them to the stairs and tell them " Okay you can go in now " My dd looks for me first...before she goes in.

We did private lessons this summer when DS was 2.5 - they started well but DS clammed up

Now I am signing him up Monday at hte YMCA. Its group lessons, and they use a "floatie" so we will see! For the group, without mommy lessons they need to be 3yo

The Y is $97 for 9 weeks.
However you have to pay a yearly program emembership fee and 1 time initiation fee so prior to signing up for lessons you have to pay about $120. it will only pay really if you do more than one session.
