if you grieved your taxes, I have a question
Last year my co worker showed me how to grieve my taxes myself (versus using one of those tax greiving companies that I get letters from all the time) and I submitted the paperwork. Today I got a letter in the mail from the town saying they reviewed my appeal for the 2012-13 tax year and they will reduce the assessed value by 150. How do you know what the exact dollar amount of reduction will be off your taxes? Also I have to sign and accept or reject the offer by the end of January. I just want to know if there is any fees involved in signing the acceptance form? I figure I would ask those of you that have gone through this process before.. thanks!

There should be no fees associated with signing the document (at least there were none for me). The amount our taxes were reduced was stated on the document (I am pretty sure). I am sure you can call up and find out the amount if it is not on the paper.

Re: if you grieved your taxes, I have a question
First off: Nassau or Suffolk?
The 2012/13 tax rates haven't been published yet so no one can tell you how much you are going to be saving for the 2012/13 tax year.
If in Suffolk County, take the current total tax rate (2011/12) - you can find it on your 2011/12 tax bill. Multiply your $150 reduction in assessment by the current tax rate and thats the estimate of your savings for 2012/13.
If in Nassau, it's going to be a lot harder to predict. Nassau reassesses each year and the trend for 2012/13 is that most properties will be receiving a lower assessment because values have dropped. Values have dropped so dramatically, we have no way of predicting where the tax rates will be - and the experts are usually pretty good at it. However, you can again take the current tax rate and multiply it by the $150 reduction to get a ballpark figure.
If you protested the assessment on your own, there are no fees associated with accepting the offer from the County or Town.

Thank you, yes it is Nassau county. I guess any reduced assessment will help my taxes be a bit lower anyway, right?

I wish the answer to this question was yes, but it's really a Yes and a No - especially in Nassau County
The No Part: Unfortunately, when so many people win tax challenges, the amount of taxes that the County and School District collect goes down. So to "fix" this situation, they keep raising the tax rates. It's a never-ending cycle.
The Yes Part: Since your assessment is lowered, you will be paying less of an increase due to the tax rate being raised than you would have been before the reduction in assessment.
