Re: if you had to give a reference that is NOT a previous employer, who would you pick
In my field, probably a professor from law school or a contemporary in my field (someone I went to law school with, perhaps, and maintain a personal / professional relationship with or someone else in my field I am friendly with).
Outside of law, I would pick someone in the same industry, who is articulate and well-respected, and (of course) who would give me the best reference.
ETA the "why" -- I would pick someone articulate for obvious reasons. You want someone who will give an excellent reference and use the right words. You also want the potential employer to identify you with someone intelligent and well-spoken. I would pick someone in the same field (or a closely related field) because that person can not only speak to your integrity and character as a person, but can also speak for how that carries over into your professional duties.

def use a professor next iw would consider using a client if that applies.
When I first started out in my field, a few clients actually wrote me letters of reference for my file, on their own, I never asked them. So I could also contact them and as for a reference.
the reasons: they saw me preform in the actual work situation I would be applying for the position in, who knows me better!!

I like this idea, too... For obvious reasons, it wouldn't be a good idea in MY line of work - but I could definitely see that being really helpful in other professions!

I'd pick a professor from my graduate program (because they've seen what I can do academically) or the senior member of my department (who was basically my mentor my first year and has become a very good friend).

Roommate from college (she's a VP at SB) She knows how I work & can vouch for my character.
