I think it's pricey, but you can also look into wood countertops.
We did a wood insert in our granite counter tops and it is not expensive at all. Actaully IKEA sells wood countertops. Pics are in my album. We have a unique house. It is an only cottage and it think the brown granite looks okay but I love the look of the stone countertops.

Rachel --- your post made me want to do a google image search, and now I want a house of my own to decorate
I like the white cabinet, heavy metal hardware, and wood cabinet look --- with a few open/glass cabinets....
