If you have a front-loader washing machine
Are you happy with it? I think we're going to be in the market for a new washer/dryer soon, and DH is insistent on getting the front-loaders. I've heard nothing but bad things from people I know who have them...the cycles are longer, they tend to smell musty, etc. Please share your experiences!

Re: If you have a front-loader washing machine
mine doesn't smell. After we use it, we leave the door open so it can dry. Also, we use something called Afresh every once in a while to clean it. I know that they're high efficient, but honestly, I'm not the biggest fan. The clothes tend to get tangled and when you take them out to put them in the dryer, they fall onto the floor. I always have to have a laundry basket on the floor to catch the clothes that fall out. I was just as happy if not happier with our old top loaders.

We have a Bosch front load washer and dryer and we love them. The cycles are actually much shorter than our old school washer and dryer. And, the washer uses much less water which is a great bonus too.

Re: If you have a front-loader washing machine
I have one and I don't like it. I have no choice here (I'm in Germany) and they have top loaders, but they are really front loaders in disguise.
I think I don't like it b/c it is small (load size). Mind you, I am in a temporary apartment now and I have to buy a new one in a few weeks, so I will be getting a bigger (load size) front loader.
However, there are some good points. It really cleans your clothes and there are many options on how to clean your clothes. It is also space saving. It is better for the environment too.
The smell can happen if you close the door. The smell builds up in the seal, so you need to leave it open so it dries. Also you need to use HE detergent and that helps with the smell. My wash does take a long time, but there are short cycles. You get used to it.
ETA: They also last longer, from what I have heard. It isn't uncommon for them to last 20-30 years here in Germany.

Bosch is an excellent brand. It will last you a long time if you go with a Bosch.

Re: If you have a front-loader washing machine
I had a stackable front loader in my old apt and I loved it. I had a top loader at my parents house and my front loader fit so much more. My mom would come with her heavy blankets to do laundry at our house because it fit so much in it.

Re: If you have a front-loader washing machine
I have a front loader and love it. I find it is gentler on my clothes, but still cleans them. Plus, I can fit more in each load, because there is no agitator taking up space inside. Uses less water and less detergent (HE detergent). As long as you leave it open between uses, there shouldn't be an odor.

I like mine. It is very quiet and you do not have to use that much detergent (which is always a plus) I keep the door open and closed and ours does not smell.
