I am waiting 2 more cycles and then going to try IUI. But, I cant really afford to do this more then a few times. I heard if they fail its really hard to go back to natural. I have low estrogen but, pretty much have unexplained Infertility. IVF is not a option financially. So, are there any other options?

NY State has an infertility grant... we used that for our first IVF since we had no IVF coverage. Not sure if that would help you... Chat Icon

If your IUI's fail why is it hard to go back to natural? I mean besides the obvious problems that could be initially preventing?

And to answer your question I know there are IVF grants, you could always break into your 401k, start saving money now, or is it possible to switch insurances?

Mine doesn't currently cover IVF and so in Dec. I am switching out, hopefully I won't need it though.

Good luck!Chat Icon

Do you mean switching to a private insurance company? I only have one option at work and DH and I work for the same company.

That is what a friend told me who had failed IUIs and a IVF that it would be hard to go back to natural after that.

Columbia has a sliding scale program based of your total family income, you may want to look into it. From what I know about IUI&IVF, it does not have anything to do with you not being able to continue to try naturally. I did 8 IUI's that failed and am now doing IVF for the first time this month because of finance issues. Best Wishes

We did at least 7 failed IUI's, and like you could not afford IVF (it wasn't covered by insurance).
We figured we'd just keep doing IUI's until we could either save $ or we reached our breaking point.
In the meantime, our clinic was participating in a trial drug study that we qualified for, and we were eligible to have a month of IVF totally covered.
While we were taking a month off from the drugs (you have to have everything out of your system before you can begin IVF), we got pregnant on our own... completely 'naturally'

Don't let anyone who isn't a dr tell you that its harder to get pregnant naturally after having IUI's or IVF - unless you have a medical reason why you can't. There are so many stories out there of women who got pregnant on the month they 'took off' for whatever reason that may be!

There are IVF grants you can look into via NYS, or through your dr's office. Or as i said before, do as many IUI's as you can (if they're paid for) while saving up on your own for an IVF cycle.

good luck!

That is the thing my IUIs are NOT PAID FOR Chat Icon
I don't see even being able to do more then a few.
We can't even save for IVF when we are already spending money on all the testing that isnt covered and out of pocket for IUIs.

Re: If you have failed IUIs and cant afford IVF then what?

So, glad you posted this..I feel your pain, I only have IF coverage to Jan 1 and than we are on our own. If we need IVF we cannot afford it anytime in the near future. The NYS grant is no longer. My RE finances IVF but I wouldn't even be able to afford it on the monthly payment options they offer. I really have no clue what we will do. It really saddens me that if these iui's don't work we may not be able to make my dd a big sister ever Chat Icon I really feel like its unfair, some states like NJ and CT mandate IF insurance, not necessarily IVF but some sort of coverage. DH and I have tossed around the idea of moving to another state as crazy as that sounds.

I just don't get how I work for a major corporation and I can't even get basic IF coverage. All of my medical bills are piling up. Its stressful enough to be going through infertility without the added stress of no IF coverage.

Re: If you have failed IUIs and cant afford IVF then what?

I am having the same problem here in FL. My insurance does not pay for IVF. I saved for a year to do it and my first cycle failed. I am now saving for the next cycle. I am going to try to save for one more try. The meds are the most expensive. My doctor is working with me, but the meds are almost more then what he charges. Good luck to you!
