If you have hardwood flooring..

We had NO choice when we bought our house but to put all new HW floors in. The previous owners had multiple (like 30) cats and the old floor was soaked with urine. So fast forward, 5 years later, we are having our first baby and I want the baby's room to be carpeted - and I figure while we are doing that, maybe carpet the upstairs hallway and maybe the stairs too. (We have area rugs in many of the rooms). I just think even tho the HW looks pretty, carpeting adds a nice warm touch. My DH is like WHY we have the HW floors etc etc. We also have 2 cats and a dog who all shed. I see countless hairballs all week long and I am constantly swiffering. And when the baby comes once he starts crawling, walking, carpet will be nice.

How can I convince my DH that I just want to put it in *some* of the rooms - not all?? I want to replace the area rug we have in our living room bc it is 5 yrs old, too small for the room and we really need an 8x10. But other than that - for now I just want the carpet in the baby's room and the upstairs hallway. And I will be satisfied! He is like well we can't we have the cats and the dog blah blah...what difference does that make? I told him we LIVE here - it's not a temporary situation!

Personally, I side with your DH. I think hardwood floors are so much more sanitary than carpet. Especially with animals. On hardwood you can see hair, dirt and dust and clean it right away whereas with carpet, everything gets trapped in the carpet.

i totally agree. Carpets trap allergens and dust. we don't have carpet in our house. all wood floors and i think it's so much cleaner!

Re: If you have hardwood flooring..

As someone whos whole house is HW and has a 9 month old DD who wants to crawl everywhere, i really wish we had SOME carpeting. I agree that its cleaner to have the HW with the animals (we have 6 dogs and 3 cats so i know all about the shedding) but id rather vacuum everyday if it will benefit my DD. Even with an area rug, its still not good enough for her. I would definitely carpet the baby's room at least, we are planning on doing that soon.

I agree - only 2 rooms in our house are carpeted. It was never an issue with DD.

Me too. I hate carpeting. I can't wait to do the rest of my house in hardwood. So far only the downstairs is hardwood.

I have all hardwood floors and prefer them to carpeting.

Maybe a nice compromise would be a large area rug for the baby's room.

Myself, I'm a wall the wall carpet person. I never seen so much wood floors until I moved here. The up keep it really hard but it's so much cleaner even if you have a hair ball or two.

I have two children and hard woods. I prefer hard woods in the bedrooms and that's it. I do not like the look of it in the halls or stairs. It's a personal decision and I think you need to consider resale as well.
