If you make and freeze your own baby food question
How do you defrost them? My daughter bought a set of cube storage containers from Green Sprouts. It says to defrost in fridge, do not heat to prevent leaching. Does that mean don't microwave in it? What if you forget to take something out ahead of time to defrost in fridge, can you put it in some hot water (like you would heat a bottle? Also, do you defrost all 3 meals the night before?

Re: If you make and freeze your own baby food question
I make my own food and freeze it. I don't use any kind of special storage. I just store them in ziploc bags and defrost them in a bowl (BPA free). If she forgets to take it out in time, maybe she can leave it out for a few minutes on the counter nd then pop the cube into a microwave safe dish.

defrost in the fridge night before, but I'm guilty of forgetting about it, so I would zap in the microwave till its slushy then let it sit to thaw out.
If I have more time than that, I put it in a little cup and sit it in some hot water.

I freeze in individual containers and let them defrost on the counter for a bit. Since it is a small amount, it doesnt take long.
I than pour the food into a small saucepan and heat for a few minutes to take out the chill.

Re: If you make and freeze your own baby food question
I freeze everything in ice cube containers and then place cubes in ziploc bags. I really don't like to use the microwave for much so I usually re-heat it in a small pot on the stove, but in a jam I have microwaved it. I try to remember to defrost the night before, and yes its usually all 3 meals. However if DS didn't finish fruit of whatever at 1 meal, I'd use the rest at another meal that day or the next day.
For those containers in particular I don't have experience but I probably wouldn't microwave them.

I put the plastic cubes in some hot water for a few minutes. I sometimes even do this if the cube is already defrosted but it's not something I would want to eat cold. lol. I never microwave her food.

Re: If you make and freeze your own baby food question
I freeze the food in ice cube trays and once its frozen, I pop out the cubes and store them in labeled zip lock bags. I try to take out the food I need for the next day/night the night before and let it defrost in the fridge, then heating it up in a water bath. But if I forget, I put the frozen cubes in a microwave safe glass bowl and zap it for 30 seconds. I stir it vigorously when it comes out to make sure I take care of whatever hot spots there are, and temperature test it to my lips before I give dd each spoonful.
We are generally, though, pretty strict about not microwaving any plastic containers. I just don't trust that even if it says "microwave safe" that it is and that it wouldn't leech.

Re: If you make and freeze your own baby food question
That happened to me yesterday, I forgot to take it out and I boiled some water in a small pot and put the container in the pot until it was getting soft then I let it stand on the counter for a few minutes. If was fine and she ate it all.

Re: If you make and freeze your own baby food question
I freeze in ice cube trays, transfer to ziplock freezer bags, and defrost an ice cube at a time that I need/want in the microwave OR fridge (depending on if I plan ahead or not.) It's never an issue.

Re: If you make and freeze your own baby food question
I just put the food in ice cube trays, froze them and then popped them out and put them in ziplocs. Two of the squarish ice cubes was about one jar of food.
I found the containers to be more trouble than they were worth.
On the other hand, what would be leeching are the containers not BPA free? If so, I would toss them. I had a containers but, I rarely used them since I made large batches at a time and they were pricey.
As far as defrosting, I nuked it when I was home but, for daycare, I just sent the frozen cube in a little take and toss bowl and it was defrosted by the time the ate there.
