I wear my mask even though I hate it. I already had the virus and I can't help but wonder the long term effects. I read that it might lead to neurological damage and that can cause numbness. I've had that pins and needles feeling in my hands a lot recently and I wonder if that is related.
Americans aren't the only ones complaining about masks though. I follow travel & lifestyle bloggers all over the world and they all sound the same recently. Long rants about people not wearing masks. Anyone saying otherwise just sounds sheltered to me.
Read the international news. I don't think anyone likes them. Last I read Australia's outbreaks are on the rise again and the government still isn't recommending or requiring masks in most parts yet. I think Victoria is getting close to requiring them. Push back from citizens there rivals the US. I've also read that the people in England are some of the most reluctant to follow mask orders in comparison to the US. It's not just the people in the United States that refuse to wear masks.
I was just going to say this. Plus the person who originally posted about American being the only ones, clearly doesn’t like Americans. So I wouldn’t take her comments as gospel.
People in England are not wearing masks. I was talking to a friend who lives in London and she said they are laxed over there and think it’s funny how crazy Americans are with masks. One of my sisters co-workers in England also made the same comment on a conference call the other day. So to says it’s only American who complain is just pure ignorance.
This!!! I don’t understand what they’re talking about. I follow international news as well and just like u guys said Americans are not the only ones that have problems with masks. Also some countries left it optional to the individual even from the very beginning. They encouraged wearing a mask but never made it mandatory. I personally wear a mask if the store requires it but u bet I take breaks from it if I feel my anxiety starts to build up or I start getting headaches. It’s just not worth it for me to have an anxiety attack in the middle of a store for a mask that’s not even really protecting me or others.

I have absolutely no problem with ppl that want to take extra precautions. Ppl should be able to do what they think it’s best for them and their family. What I kinda have a problem with is the fact that the person writing this is mentioning viruses that don’t leave the body while at the same time talking about covid, that’s kinda of inferring that covid can be just like those viruses. I mean if we truly don’t know how covid is then why only mention those viruses and not include viruses that the body is able to overcome completely (those that don’t stay dormant within our cells)? Then the person says being “smart enough to be scared of how easily this is spread”. Well there’s nothing smart about being scared. Being scared does not contribute anything good, it actually can make things worse. It can make us do things out of fear without thinking things logically. Also last time I checked there’s no studies that actually proves mis-c is a result of covid so why the need of mentioning? To me, it just add to unnecessary fear.
Maybe to point out the fact that there are viruses out there that never leave your body and that there could be long term effects that we still don't know about. There seem to be a lot of people who think that if you don't die of Covid then you are fine and there won't be long term effects. Making it seem like we shouldn't be worrying about contracting it since such a small number actually die from it.
I get what u’re saying but the fact that we don’t fully know this virus is the reason why we shouldn’t only focus on the worse. The person that wrote that should not have only presented those viruses because ppl will assume covid is actually just like those viruses and think the worse when in reality we don’t know with certainty. It could or it could not be, we don’t know. If ppl want to take extra precaution then that’s a different story, they’re more than entitled to.

Yup, I clearly hate Americans.
Most of my British (yeah, not English, learn the difference) friends are annoyed, but they are more annoyed that masks were RECENTLY made mandatory there. They are upset at how the response took so long and how crap a job the government did.
You must know the Brexiters then.
People may not like them, but they do as they are told and don’t sit there and yell at people in the shops or, you know, use their guns to protest against them.
ETA: Yes, in Australia in Victoria, it may very well explode soon. But the ones that are not following the rules are bogans. My friends there are horrified by the way some of them are reacting. However, Australia in general has very strict quarantine and will probably keep it under control. Because most of the population will do as they are told. They will probably buy all the toilet paper, though.

You do, it’s clear from all your post you have something against America. I didn’t magically come up with this conclusion on my own.
You originally stated that only Americans complain. But yet just admitted that British do not like the masks as well in your above statement. Make up your mind.
You aren’t the only one who knows people around the world just because you live overseas. Get over yourself. I actually lived in London and have a lot of close friends overseas.
Happy 4th from the country you love so much!

Perhaps the original comment should be complaining so much with the way Americans react.
Whatever, you do you. I don’t really care. I can say that I am sick of getting all the questions of why Americans are like the way they are.
And you lived in London. Fine. Probably wasn’t long term.

I was at the beach and this man, not wearing a mask, started randomly verbally attacking a black man who was wearing a mask, sitting peacefully and happy with his mask on. The man without the mask started saying "you have to take it off sometime!" and the man in the mask was like "no thanks, I'm good" and the man in the mask was like "you need to breathe, breathe man. the air. everyone has to breathe" and the masked man said "I'm breathing just fine in this mask. You can breathe in a mask, I'm here doing it keeping you safe". and the other man started going ballistic after that and was almost fighting him to take his mask off. I didn't understand why the mask-less man even needed to open his mouth in the first place. It was very aggravating.
Also I was at a restaurant eating outside, near other stores, so our seat was by the bushes which separates the restaurant from the people walk alongside there. We were still wearing our masks at the table, we only took them off to eat. This man just stopped by the table we were eating at and just starts hacking spit in the bushes. I couldn't believe it. It was disgusting. Flinging spit into our area so gross. I felt like it was on purpose as when he was done and I looked at him horrified he smiled and winked and kept walking.
I HATE PEOPLE.
Omg! Both of those stories are bananas! What the fuk is wrong with people???
If you aren't gonna where a mask then why wear clothes? The governor is infringing on your civil rights to walk around nude...
I read something the other day that said that Americans are quite individualistic and not collective.
Yup, makes sense to me. I swear the US is one of the only countries complaining about masks.
Stolen from a friend who lives in Germany....so true
*Covid hits Europe*
European governments: Hey we need to lock down for a while and everyone wear masks.
European citizens: Ok good idea
American citizens: haha that'll never happen here silly Europeans
*Covid hits America*
American government: Hey we need to lock down for a while and everyone wear masks
American citizens: **** you open everything I'm not wearing a mask I want a haircut
American government: Guys c'mon really...
American citizens: *points machine gun in governments face* Open everything now we need hamburgers
*Covid gets better in Europe*
European governments: hey guys good job you all did your part, we can start opening now just still wear a mask please
European citizens: Sweet thanks glad we could help
American government: Since y'all are mad we'll start reopening but please wear a mask
American citizens: **** you I don't want to wear a mask the virus is fake anyway
*Covid gets worse in America*
American government: Guys seriously if you don't wear a mask we'll have to lock down again nobody wants to do that.
American citizens: **** you I'm not wearing a mask! Freedom!!
European governments: Guys you did a great job feel free to travel and go hang out now enjoy your summer just bring your masks and be safe
European citizens: Yay summer! I'm gonna go visit my friends!
American citizens: They just want to control us and take our rights away man.
*Covid keeps getting worse in America*
American government: Guys c'mon we told you.....now we need to lock down again please please wear a mask please
American citizens: They just want to control us!! Masks are tyranny!!
European governments: We gotta quarantine America, don't invite them to your summer parties
European citizens: Yea good idea those people are crazy.
American citizens: FREEDOM!!!!
For once, I sort of agree with you .
It gets the basic idea, but there were more hiccups. Still curious to see how it is in September/October. They are mostly open here, but it isn’t as crowded as it usually is. People are being cautious.
They make masks compulsory here, but you can not wear one and no one will yell at you. People do what they are told. Everyone knows it helps, so they do it. They even lowered the sales tax from 19% to 16%. Yay!

BTW, I can take a joke when it is actually funny. I’m not superior and I’m having a really hard time with the Corona crisis.

Yup. You clearly don’t know me.
Thank God for small miracles!
Again, proving what a lovely human being you are.
Oh please you’re the most condescending troll on here. Look at your last comment about me only living in London a short time. The majority of your posts stink of superiority and condescension. You also can’t take a joke ever, which, adds to how stuck up you are.
And I’m actually a great human being thanks.

A poster points out that there are British people who don’t want to wear masks, you say “oh those are brexiters, most British wear them”
A poster says Australians complain about the masks, and you have an excuse for that too because your friends don’t feel that way.
EVERYONE on this thread has said not only do they wear masks but they rarely see anyone IRL who won’t, and yet you continue to make blanket statements about “Americans”.

Re: If you need a response when bullied about “overreacting” re: covid
a week ago i came off the beach after beach yoga, wearing my mask.
a maniac woman on a bike rode past me, screamed at the top of her lungs at me "the biggest oxymoron ever! a yoga mat and a mask! the stupidity is amazing!".
i did not respond, although i had to hold myself back from pitching her off the bike.
i've gotten into clashes with people in my building who want to get into an elevator with me without mask.
One guy got in after I got in, he had no mask. I said "You don't have a mask??" before the door closed.
His reply: "I already had it, i'm good."
So basically f me right?
I exited the elevator. I really wanted to get into a fight but then he'd spread his germs all over me.

31 states STILL do not require them.
Southern states are (for the most part) pushing ahead with reopening despite rapidly rising numbers.
Individualism is very inherent in American culture vs. a more collectivist identity that you see in many other places. Pick yourself up by the bootstraps, I got mine screw everyone else, I only give a shit about myself.
OF COURSE not all Americans are like that. And I think things are (overall) getting better. But in certain areas, among certain groups, that's the dynamic you see and hear.
I think it's worth acknowledging this cultural flaw because we can't make it better if we don't say it out loud.

I think it's worth acknowledging this cultural flaw because we can't make it better if we don't say it out loud.
LI is in the United States. There are plenty of areas in the South that are wearing their masks. Anecdotal evidence from klingklang and her superior friends all over the world is irrelevant. Yes, the USA is an individualistic country, but it is not considered the most individualistic country and Germany is right up there next to the USA in terms of being considered "individualistic".
Americans complain about wearing masks, but a lot of us still wear them. We're allowed to complain about it & we're allowed our opinions. In areas where the government hasn't mandated masks, they don't have to wear them. End of story.
It is your opinion that self-preservation (ie. putting the individual first) is a cultural flaw. Just because you don't like it, doesn't mean it's wrong to be that way. It's actually the opposite of wrong, scientifically it is a basic instinct that we're all born with.

Yup, I’m stuck up. I can’t take a joke. I’m superior. I’m a troll. I’m condescending.
You have me allllll figured out. Why waste your time responding?
BTW, I can take a joke when it is actually funny. I’m not superior and I’m having a really hard time with the Corona crisis.
Again you do you and stick to your own lane.
Honestly most of us are having a hard time. The last few days have been crazy here with everyone attacking each other.
All of us have had a really difficult time these past months (and still are!) but that should not give anyone a pass to treat others horribly. That’s a bullish!t excuse.
Uh, I made a comment about something I read. I then get told I hate Americans. On another thread I was told my SO doesn’t really like me, he’s weird and all this other BS. It got quite personal, and I don’t have to sit there and take it. It’s not a BS excuse. .
You act as if people can’t come to logical conclusions about who you are based on thousands of posts-and when people point out your behavior, you claim that it’s untrue.
Your posts do make you look to be anti-American many times.
You also tend to attack anyone who doesn’t align precisely with your views, which is basically everyone, and this is why people often bristle at your posts.

I didn't follow the whole thread so I'm not sure what klingklang has said already but I want to address the cultural aspect of this.
The issue with those anecdotes is that LI is NOT the United States. There are parts of the country, usually rural or semi rural areas but not always, where there is so much rebellion against wearing masks.
The fact that people don't have to wear masks is "the end of the story" is part of my point. Both the lack of a directive and the "I don't give a shit about other people" sentiment is part of our moral failing as a nation.
Your reference to instinct is irrelevant. We have plenty of instincts that we have to fight to get through the day and function in society. Also, your response fails to account for any nuance. Of course we can and should watch out for ourselves but we also need to consider and watch out for our fellow Americans.
The last word is yours because I am heading out, but I will always not only mourn our failings (i.e. COVID aside, we are the only developed nation that regularly requires people to declare bankruptcy to pay medical bills) but fight to change them.

U can’t just treat ppl poorly and say...oh it’s because I’ve had a tough time during this pandemic. It just doesn’t work that way. Plus u’ve had the same type of behavior towards others even before covid. What excuse are u gonna use for that behavior?

If you need a response when bullied about “overreacting” re: covid
Why are people still complaining about masks????? Put your big girl panties on and shut up about it, this is life now, at least for next 1 -2 years , if not forever. Adapt, get used to it. And if I'm wrong , and it magically goes away like all the Trump supporters think, I will gladly say I'm wrong. And don't bother attacking me, I'm on this board over a decade , and I won't respond to the "mean girls'.

People may not align with the views of others, but there is no need to attack them on a personal level and say “you put out enough info for us to do that.” No. Just no.

Never treated anyone “poorly.” I disagreed and fought back when I was treated poorly.

a week ago i came off the beach after beach yoga, wearing my mask.
a maniac woman on a bike rode past me, screamed at the top of her lungs at me "the biggest oxymoron ever! a yoga mat and a mask! the stupidity is amazing!".
i did not respond, although i had to hold myself back from pitching her off the bike.
i've gotten into clashes with people in my building who want to get into an elevator with me without mask.
One guy got in after I got in, he had no mask. I said "You don't have a mask??" before the door closed.
His reply: "I already had it, i'm good."
So basically f me right?
I exited the elevator. I really wanted to get into a fight but then he'd spread his germs all over me.
So I've been thinking about this and still can't figure it out- what is the connection between a mask and a yoga mat ad what makes it an oxymoron? I don't get the connection. Am I missing something? Or was she just insane? I mean she was clearly insane to yell at a stranger for no reason, but what did she mean that having a yoga mat while wearing a mask was an oxymoron?
