If you put rice cereal in your DC formula, please help

DS has reflux so the ped said to put the rice cereal in his formula, to make it like the consistency of honey. I did this last night and was squeezing as hard as I could and the thickened formula would not come out of the nipple. What nipples did you use? TIA

I use the Y cut nipples. The first bottle or 2 he had to get used to the change, but then it was no prob. We put in 2 tablespoons of oatmeal in every bottle. Doc suggested oatmeal instead of rice because rice is very binding and we didn't want constipation issues with all the rice. We've been doing this for months now and no problems.

How much are you putting in?

I also agree with kra5hnburn and go with Oatmeal instead of Rice.

My son gets 1 teaspoon of Oatmeal in his 7oz bottle. I just kept opening up the nipple with a fork and it worked. I didn't need to get the Y cut.

we switched to Dr. Brown's Bottles, and they make a special "Y" cut nipple for thicker liquids.

DS gets 2 Tablespoons of Rice Cereal in his bottles. Here is the "mix":

3 Scoops of powdered formula
6 oz of water
2 Tablespoons of Rice Cereal

Makes about an 8oz bottle (For every scoop of water with 1 scoop of formula makes 2.2 oz of formula)...

We use a regular FAST FLOW Playtex nipple for the above mixture. It does get clogged sometimes but mixing really really good helps prevent this..(shaking for at least a minute)

I have also found that beechnut cereal is better to use in bottles than Gerber or any of the others for that matter. It is a lot finer consistancy.

I have additionallly found that the rice works better for the reflux than the oatmeal. (could just be me but I found it to help more)...it took DS about a week to adjust but his bowel movements returned to normal and the rice no longer binds him.
