If you quit smoking when you got your BFP...

did you go back to smoking or did you stay quit?

I have no desire at all to smoke now pregnant and am praying I do not go back. I had tried to quit before and had cut down a lot before BFP and was a light, mainly weekend/social smoker.

Just want to see the reality of what happens for most....

Thanks for your feedback Chat Icon

I have been a non-smoker for 6 years now! Chat Icon

I quit when I got pregnant in 12/04. After I had my DDs I smoked maybe 5 or six times socially--bumming from other friends. The last time I smoked a cigarette was August 2009; it made me throw up and that was that.

When I smoked I'd have about 15/day, but for some reason I KNEW it would never be a lifetime thing. My DH HATES smoking, so that probably has something to do with it. My sister was never able to quit...and her last child was born 5.5 years ago.

ETA...I have absolutely NO desire ever to smoke...even while drinking. And don't get me wrong--I LOVED smoking, every minute of it. The thought of it just makes me absolutely sick now.

Re: If you quit smoking when you got your BFP...

I smoked since I was 13 Chat Icon I was 30 when I got my BFP. I quit immediately. I contemplated having a last hooray one, but I thought if ANYTHING was (god forbid) wrong with this baby I would blame that last cigarette. DS is now 6 mo and I have yet to go back nor have any desire to. DH doesnt smoke so surely that helps.

Re: If you quit smoking when you got your BFP...

I've been dealing with this got more then 4 years. I quit immediately with DS 1 and slowly went back to smoking over a few months. DH and I quit a few tomes along the way but always went back. I was smoking when I got pregnants with DS 2 and again quit. I am currently a social smoker. I wish I could say I don't smoke at all, but that would be a lie.

Re: If you quit smoking when you got your BFP...

By the time I was BFP, I was only smoking socially so maybe it was easier for me but I haven't had a cigarette since right before I got pregnant and haven't craved one either.

For me, the first issue is that now that I have DS, I want to make sure I am as healthy as possible so that I am around for many, many years! DH lost his mother to lung cancer in 2007 and I would never want my DS to have to go through something like that Chat Icon

Secondly, I can't imagine subjecting DS to second (or third) hand smoke and increasing his chances of developing asthma, etc.

I quit when I got by BFP 5 years ago, January 11 Chat Icon Chat Icon . I smoked about 10 - 15 cig a day before I quit cold turkey. I remembered how hard it was to quit so I never went back. I occasionally craved one before getting pregnant again with DS2, but never gave in. After 8 months of pregnancy with him (he was 6 1/2 weeks early) then 15 months of nursing, I never had a craving again.
The hardest thing for me was (and still is), that DH still smokes Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: If you quit smoking when you got your BFP...

I quit the day I got a BFP.
It wasnt too hard, luckily, but I did have many dreams about me smoking Chat Icon The messed up part was that I was PG in my dreams.

I have been smoke free about 1.5 yrs niw. I wil not go back, but I do miss it. After having DS I did for a few weeks feel like I was going through withdrawls, so wierd since an entire pregnancy since I had had a cigerette.

Re: If you quit smoking when you got your BFP...

Before I found out I was pregnant, I smoked about a pack and a half a day, sometimes more! I was smoking for 8 years...I quit once before for 8 months, but had just ONE slip, and was right back where I stared! When I found out I was pregnant, I'm not going to lie, I smoked 1 cigarette a week for the first couple of weeks..Before I knew it, I wasn't smoking at all!
At almost 4 months post partum and almost a year of quitting, it has become a lot easier not to smoke! I don't even think about a cig anymore when I used to need one the most! (when I wake up, eat, drink, work, etc.)
Once in a blue moon I will think to myself how nice a cig would be, but then I tell myself NO and the urge goes away...my thing was getting through every season and every "firsts" without a cig (you know, first time at the beach without one, etc.)
and I was a heavy smoker! and I am almost 1 year smoke free!
good luck!

I quit. And so did DH!!!!! The best thing we EVER did. I always tease that DD saved our lives, but I really believe it!

Re: If you quit smoking when you got your BFP...

I smoked a few everyday before getting pregnant and stopped when i got pregnant. In the 2 years since i had DD i think i've taken 2 or 3 puffs, while having some drinks of course. I really have no desire at all and the taste makes me sick now so i dont think i will ever take a puff again. DD needs her mommy and i dont want smoking to be the reason i leave her without one.

Re: If you quit smoking when you got your BFP...

I was a pack a day smoker for 24 years when we needed to start IVF. I figured it was better to try and quit then rather than when I was "forced" to quit when (and if) I got my BFP. The day I was to start my meds, I threw my pack in the garbage and with the exception of a stray cig from a friend here and there, in those beginning weeks, I have stayed quit. About three years now. I still like the smell thoughChat Icon DH quit about 6 months before me so that certainly helped. I also think the cost of cigarettes have helped keep me quit. I cant even imagine being able to afford today's pricesChat Icon (I quit when I could get my Marlboros for $4.50 at CVS)

i smoked socially from college until i got my BFP. i never missed it for one second once I quit.

even now, i might have 1-2 per week but then i can go 2 months without one. it was never an "addiction" for me.

if it is addictive for you, dont EVER go back. if you are doing it now, you can do it forever.

Re: If you quit smoking when you got your BFP...

I quit while PG and then had one the night I got home from the hospital! DH is a smoker and I endured the smell (he never smokes in the house or car though) when he'd walk back into the house....I felt that after laboring for 34.5 hours and being in the hospital from Monday night thru Saturday afternoon that I DESERVED one lol Horrible, I know! Sadly though I am back to it and smoking regularly: ( DD is never around and I always disinfect completely before going next to her and I do not let her see me smoke!

I only smoked socially (not even close to regularly at all before our DS). I stopped completely and so did DH when I got pregnant. I am 4 months+ post-partum and neither of us can even tolerate second hand smoke, so, NO, NEVER EVER going back.

Re: If you quit smoking when you got your BFP...

I quit when I got a BFP with DD. About two months after she was born, I said I needed to try it again and that was my downfall. It was my escape at 2 in the morning and I started up again. I quit cold turkey a few months before TTC DS. I am affraid this time, as now he's here and I don't want to go back. THe smell of it made me sick through my pregnancy and still does. I am hoping I can stay strong this time and not go back. I have been tempted already but did stay strong. For some reason, I think I am going to make it this time. I was tempted, but the desire to go back to it is not there. Plus DS is a much easier baby than DD and I don't need those outlets like I did with her, which also helps.

Re: If you quit smoking when you got your BFP...

The results are very encouraging.

I have zero desire or craving for a cigg but then again I know I can't have it so it is different. Also a huge trigger for me is wine/alcohol which I am also not having lol.

Thank you for your replies Chat Icon

Re: If you quit smoking when you got your BFP...

im not a smoker but my SIL was, she quit as soon as she got her BFP.. after she gave birth she went back to smoking within a couple of weeks, if that. She did crave it throughout the pregnancy though so i'd say since you are not that is pretty encouraging!

Re: If you quit smoking when you got your BFP...

I went back to it after I stopped nursing with DD, and it's bad but this time around I'm feeling the urge more and DH is still a smoker so I feel like I may go back againChat Icon It's awful bc I'm usually a very willfull person and have a lot of will power but it's also a major psychological thing for me bc I try to tend to lose the pg weight quickly and I know its the DUMBEST thing in the world to think this way but I feel like it helps meChat Icon I hate feeling that way
