If you won the lottery...
Do you think you'd be able to keep the same friends?

Yes definitely. The secondary friends would probably change though.

Absolutely! But I probably wouldn't make any new ones- I'd be paranoid they were after my $.

Re: If you won the lottery...
See, my DH thinks that although of course, you'd WANT to keep them, you wouldn't be able to because you'd acquire new rich friends, and the old friends wouldn't fit in anymore or wouldn't feel comfortable around you anymore and THEY would start to distance themselves from you.
You wouldn't have the same lifestyles anymore. You wouldn't do the same things anymore.
That's what he says anyway. Does anyone think that kind of stuff would happen? What if your best friend suddenly became a millionaire... and started being able to afford lots of glamourous things, trips, and activities, etc... would you feel weird still being their friend?

Re: If you won the lottery...
I see his point. I have a few friends that have more $ than I will ever see in my life. However, they had it when we became friends and it hasn't been an issue.
I'd WANT to keep my "old" friends and hope that money would not interfere. Now that I think about it- there is probably one I would lose, b/c I have a funny feeling her BF is jealous already.

Re: If you won the lottery...
If I won, not that much would change. I know people of all finacial situations and we all get along and hang out (from millionaires to people struggling). I don't need "glamarous" vacations- If I could travel like I did on my honeymoon- it would be great. My life would change in simple ways- buy an apartment in NYC, pay of debt... make some investments and be a SAHM and travel more. That's about it. Nothing my friends couldn't join me in.

Re: If you won the lottery...
I see your DHs point, but in the end those are your friends who really know you best.
When we used to work golf tournaments in Palm Springs - my boss's best friend would fly into town. She lived in France & had married the grandson of a well-known painter. We would go to the supermarket, buy all of the Enquirer, People, Star and any other trashy gossip magazine plus a ton of Susie Qs to have in her room when she came in. They have different lifestyles, but are just as close as ever. She was still that girl from junior high. I think a big part of it was that she didn't treat her any differently -- and my boss would never begrudge her good fortune.
My college roommate - while she didn't win the lottery - married someone who has the equivalent of a lottery win and does very well for herself. She's changed a bit, eats at better restaurants, has higher standards for the wine, looks better, dresses better, etc.
She had a falling out with a close family friend who said she's changed. The truth is she really hasn't changed - but this so called "friend" is so envious of my friend's life - she just can't get past it.

Re: If you won the lottery...
Yes I know I will. those "new" rich friends- I wonder when and if the money runs out would they still be your friend, so to me they are really not friends in my eyes, the true meaning. And if Im wrong great! I made new friends to accompany my old friends.

Re: If you won the lottery...
Yes, I would be more worried about how many "new" people would want to be friends with me. I am not sure how much my lifestyle would change, other than buy a house or two and take more expensive trips. I would probably sock a lot of it away or start a business.

Re: If you won the lottery...
yes especially after I shared
I actually dream of winning and being able to help my friends....So I think my friendships are strong enough we would.
Also , many of you know my BIL won the lottery, enough to make a HUGE impact and he still has the same group of friends as always, not much actually changed....

Re: If you won the lottery...
Unfortuntely, it seems that most of them are a little envious as it is now so I think if I were to win the lotto they'd disappear.

I would love to keep all of my friends but I also tend to agree with your husband. Its almost like childhood friends, you grow up with them thinking their great but as you become educated and further your life through marriage, children etc..., some fall out because you are not on the same level as you might have been as a child. Becoming rich I would think would be one of thos next levels. The area you live in may change, the people you associate with might change etc... People arent always willing or able to accept a different you. Like I said, I would love to keep them all but I could see changes happening in relationship.
