If your child has gone to the dentist please come in
OK - I am flipping the F out right now.
I finally bit the bullet and made a dentist appt for Jack at That Broadway Smile. I know he has cavities because you can see them. Tonight I examined his mouth and OMG one tooth is basically chipped away. I think he's going to need a root canal, it's THAT bad.
I'm devastated I could cry. What did we do to our baby??? Is it all the crap he eats? The fact that he brought a cup of milk to bed with him every single night for the last 2 years? I am so upset and so worried about how this visit is going to be.
ANY insight on this at all?!

My girlfriend brought her son because of his eye teeth being chipped away. The dentist suggested that she let them fall out on their own.

Re: If your child has gone to the dentist please come in
Diana, dealing with this right now with Victoria as well. Cavities and root canal surgery scheduled for July - 2 weeks before she turns 4.
It seems she had an infection before her molars even came in (the molars are the culprits here). they were completely stripped of any enamel. She's getting cavities filled, root canal and sealant put on her teeth to protect from future cavities.
I am so good with limiting her sugar intake and watching her (I mean she gets it but nothing extreme ya know), but the dentisit reassured me this was nothing that we did by feeding her poorly, not brushing her teeth properly or anything in our control. It happened before her teeth ever came through.

Donna - HOLY CRAP, that's alot of money!
Are you happy with That Broadway Smile?
I seriously feel like the world's worst mother right now. I don't know that the kid will ever see another lollipop OR cup of milk ever again

Re: If your child has gone to the dentist please come in
She's been to 2 other dentists (one of which did not even pick any of this up ) and another pediatric dentist. She did not handle being in the chair well. I've heard such great things about TBS so we went there. I let them know ahead of time how nervous and upset she got at the other places. She walked in and out of 4 different rooms, not liking any of them. They were patient with her and let her know SHE could choose any room she wanted to be examined in but had to choose one of them. She finally picked one and they were fantastic with her. Actually let the dentist put tools in her mouth but was still scared. We could have had the surgery done somewhere else but I am such a nervous wreck about it that I picked them because she responded so well to them
I have to ask, does Jack's breath stink? I feel like that was a sign that I missed with all of this

And don't beat yourself up, Victoria rarely ever had lollipops (more that she only started liking them a few months ago). But I can tell you my Dad had awful teeth and it seems all of his grandchildren are following him.

Re: If your child has gone to the dentist please come in
We took my almost 4 year DD for the 1st time a few months ago. I knew she had a few cavities and had problems with her top 2 front teeth. I thought alot of her teeth problems where from me allowing her to have a bottle at bed until she was almost 3 yrs old. She is not a big candy eater, yes she has chocolate and sweets every so often but not too much. The dentist said its all from APPLE JUICE. She did drink a lot, but always watered down. She had to have a few cavities filled and some other work done. The dentist also said genetics contributed to her poor teeth. Me and my family have a history of teeth problems and unfortunately my DD seems to also. To be honest, she was horrible the 1st time we went, screaming and yelling. It was a quick visit. We had to go back and she was given general anesthia to have all her work done. The dentist just counted all her teeth and did one quick xray. We saw a wonderful pediatric dentist in Garden City that I highly recommend. You can FM if you want

Back away from the kid's mouth and don't examine it tomorrow either! Leave it to the dentist! You know I say this with love but at this point there is nothing you can do.
Back away!

Re: If your child has gone to the dentist please come in
I know it is not good for DC to bring milk to bed with them overnight - I believe it causes bottle rot (not sure if that's the right term). My cousins all had teeth that rotted because of that. But they had the bottle with them all night. I don't think a cup of milk at bedtime (that you then take away) is a problem.
Sometimes it's just genetics. Sorry your DC is going through this. Hopefully it won't affect the permanent teeth.

Re: If your child has gone to the dentist please come in
Don't freak out. Robbie was 2.5 years old and had cavities. Not from sugar or anything.. from BREASTMILK. He had bottle rot because I fed him at night and it pooled in his mouth. Who knew? Well .. I didn't. He did not get a root canal - our dentist felt it wasn't necessary for deciduous teeth- but he did have one very bad tooth that she just yanked and then put in a space saver.
How did it all work out??

Re: If your child has gone to the dentist please come in
so much of it is genetics.... I have really bad weak enameled teeth- so does my mother- we go to the same dentist and he laughs b/c our teeth are pretty terrible.
I am a tooth brushing/flossing nazi.. I even floss DD's teeth where they touch..
AND I am pretty good about giving them the vitamins w/ the flouride- my DD still takes them...
Don't beat yourself up- but maybe ask the dentist what you can do.
to all the parents with new babies- start brushing their teeth right away- as soon as they get teeth- to get used to the whole thing- that's why my DD is so good w/ flossing- cause she's used to me messing around in her mouth!

Hey everyone! We got a second opinion and they agreed with the first dentist so Jack will be having two root canals and a few cavities filled at the end of the month. We are going to the second dentist because it's my cousins good friend, and also $1000 less which doesn't hurt.
I just can't wait for it to all be over.

I heard this from my dentist too. He despises fruit snacks. He also mentioned raisins as culprit for tooth decay. I never heard of this before! Basically anything sugary that sticks to the teeth.

OMG root canals? I'm seriously flipping out in fear. How will he do that? And wont he be all swollen afterwards ?
Am I the only mom who really doesnt know if I could do that?
What if you dont do it? It will cause pain???
Sorry for questions.
Poor Jack.

Re: If your child has gone to the dentist please come in
D I just wanted to say that my parents were UBER strict with us and our sugar intake. never any sugared cereals, no sweets before lunch, no soda when we were small, very rarely had juice, no fruit snacks (they didnt' exist ) and my sister had HORRIBLE teeth...cavities abseses, you name it...and still does, and I've never had a cavity in my life (well I do now I am sure. I am dreading going to the dentist. your four year old will probably be braver than me but that's another story )
so yeah, it is somewhat monitoring how much sweets they get, but really so much of it is genetics. now you know that Jack is perhaps more susceptile and you can be proactive with Tyler!!!!
Good luck and I hope is goes smoothly for Jack!!!!!
