If your child has tubes in the ears - please come in...
We have our first apt with an ENT on Wednesday. We probably should have brought her sooner...
I'm asking you guys what kind of questions should I ask the ENT when we see him. I'm just feel so under educated about this.
What are the pros and cons of the ear tubes?
TIA!

Re: If your child has tubes in the ears - please come in...
My DD got tubes in the middle of February after 11 ear infections :( The pros for us have been no ear infections since then! BEfore the surgery, she had been on antibiotics for almost four months straight! At our first appt, the dr. asked about her history, frequency, etc. She explained the procedure in depth and talked about what to expect from start to finish that day and after. I can't remember all the questions I asked, but I know I asked about swimming, how long will they stay in, how will I know if she gets an ear infection, what can I expect from the anesthesia, etc.
Hope this helps! And good luck.

I have no experience but wanted to wish you good luck. Everyone that I know that had to have them put in says that the procedure is not a big deal at all - the anticipation of it is what gets you. And they have worked wonders.
I really thought we were going to have to go this route too, but knock on wood, DD hasn't had ANY this 2009/2010 season.

Megan has had 6 this season... and 5 last year.

ask what kind of tubes he uses (mine used a kind that does not come out - they will need to be removed when she is 4-5 - I prefer these cause the other ones may come out too soon)

As far as questions to ask:
What type of tubes(can they get wet or not, do they come out on their own or need surgery again?)
What are the risks of anasthesia?
My son got tubes in October at 11 months old and it was a great decision for us. I was so nervous about the anasthesia, but it went super quick and he has been great since(he had 8 weeks of straight ear infections before surgery) Now he seems to feel great and be a much happier baby all around. if you do not want to go the surgery route there has been a lot of positive info about pediatric chiropractic adjustments for ear infections. HTH and good luck

I agree. Abby has the ones that do not come out. She has not had an ear infection since - they thought she did but it turned out to be wax blocking the tube.
What I think a MAJOR PRO was for Abby was the fact that her language was emerging at the time she needed them. She also hadn't been walking.
Knowing what I know about speech and language delays (I teach special education and a majority of our student body has speech and language delays of one kind or another). I was told that kids who need tubes hear as if they are under water. They cannot possibly hear words they way they are intended to be heard. They hear muffled sounds. There was no way I would risk a delay in my child out of fear of putting her under anesthesia. This is where you can be very particular about your doctors. Abby is now MONTHS ahead of her chronological age with many more than 50 words at 19 months. I expect her to be conversational very soon based on what we've seen so far.
Also, when hearing is off, balance is off. she wasn't yet walking and who knows how her walking would have been if she didn't have tubes.
I felt there was so much more at stake if we didn't put the tubes in - not to mention the degree of pain and anguish she had with each ear infection. If you have ANY questions, please feel free to FM me. I assure you that the whole thing will be harder on you than it will be on your DC.

My sister had this done with both my nephews and they were fine and it also helped them - far less ear infections. GL!
