If your dog has had bladder stones...(Dog Food Gurus please enter!)
About 3 years ago, my dog had bladder stones (struvite crystals) that were treated with some meds and a change in diet. The vet put him on Hills Prescription Diet c/d food as a maintanence, and we've been feeding him that ever since. No further problems with stones.
Now that i'm doing a little research myself, it looks like the Prescription Diet food contains a lot of junk and is not considered a top dog food. I wanted something more natural/healthy, but still want the maintanence for stones at the same time.
Does anyone have a dry food recommendation?
I will be asking my vet at our next visit, but I have a feeling he'll say that the Prescription Diet is just fine. I think they're making money off sales and not really trained on healthy dog foods.

I have heard the same things about prescription food having junk food from my doggie friends, I think it comes down to more importantly needing enough water in the diet to flush out the minerals before they form into stones. My chihuahua is on Science diet UD canned and I add water to that. I was thinking about changing his food too.
Although, I fed all of my dogs science diet their whole lives. My shepherd was 12 when he passed and my pug was 13 when he passed. Both were on science diet. It doesn't seem to shorten their live span.
I'd rather feed them something better but I am with you, paranoid about the stones coming back. My chi didn't respond well to the surgery and it cost $3,000. So if I can't find anything I will just keep him on SD and not think too much about it.
I wonder if you can google alternative brands. My cat breeder told me that the food I feed my cats (Life's Abundance) is a good choice but I never looked into their dog food formulas.

My Dog had the same issues and was put on the prescrip food. After a few weeks, we switched him to Blue Buffalo Life Protection Formula - Chicken & Brown Rice Recipe and we have had no issues since!

My dog had the same problem and was put on a special diet. It def helped the problem but like you I noticed the food was really not that good. I switched my dog to Halo about six months ago and so far it's been fine and she absolutely loves the taste. She never used to finish her food but now she can't get enough
