I would go if my friend was James Brown:

I wouldn't. Mainly because I'm not even comfortable in my own skin these days, forget a bathing suit or hot tub.

Maybe they thought you were trying to entice them to swap partners

that was the First thing i thought of---
b/c i worked with a swinger... and she used to always invite people over to 'go in the hot tub with her and her DH'
sorry tara.... but i would definitely think you were trying to get with me (so, i'm either immature, have a perverted mind, or both)

Maybe if they knew ahead of time, they would have been more prepared. Its tough last minute...if you don't have a change of clothes.

Re: If your friend has a hot tub and you are invited over for dinner and to go into the hot tub,
Ok this is going to sound crazy BUT when I was little my mom always told me never to go in hot tubs like on vacation or something because they are breeding grounds for diseases. She totally freaked me out and to this day I will ONLY go in a hot tub if it is just me and DH and a private tub.

Re: If your friend has a hot tub and you are invited over for dinner and to go into the hot tub,
my husband hates hot tubs..so we would probably say no
also, maybe shes not comfortable with her figure
who knows..maybe she doesnt want to do her hair and look nice, then ruin her look with the hot tub
also bringing a change of clothing could be annoying...or you drive home all wet in the car
i can understand - but dont take it personally!

Your mom was telling the truth. I guess it really depends on the person and see how comfortable they may feel with the couple's home...with them etc... I'd only go in a hot tub at my own home and not anyone else. I'd expect the home owner to take the appropriate steps to keep it not infected and clean but I'd still not go use it.
Here are some of the things you can get from hot tubs(this is considering the owner does not take care of keeping it healthy and clean....not your case Tara but just posting this as general). Tara...maybe your friends do not just feel comfortable....or maybe they are TTC or maybe she can be pregnant and no one knows yet...or maybe that is something they wouldn't like doing...I'd not take it personal....
"Hot tubs and whirlpool baths - because they are warm and moist - can provide a fertile breeding ground for a number of disease-causing organisms, including the Legionella bacteria which causes the sometimes fatal Legionnaires' Disease and a number of less dangerous but still serious diseases such as Pseudomonas, which can cause severe skin rashes, eye and ear infections, and pneumonia. However, these various bacteria can be easily controlled and eliminated by maintaining the disinfectant level at three parts per million (3 ppm) for chlorine residuals or 4.5 ppm for bromine. pH should be maintained between 7.2 - 7.6."

You two have dirty minds
Now that you two posted this, I guess people could think that! That never even entered my mind!
