If your kids are sick on a holiday do you take them out anyway?

I am a bit annoyed bc my kids are now sick thanks to my nephew bing here on christmas and he was sick. He had croup the week before christmas and strep throat as of the monday before Christmas. He also threw up all over my kitchen floor on christmas day. I am annoyed and my dh says well what were they supposed to do stay home on Christmas? My answer was YES. He is not yet 4 and he would have had just as much fun playing with all his new toys at home. THOUGHT?

If we were going to house that had other children I would either not go or call the parents to discuss. My SIL and I have called and talked about it and sometimes we say come anyway but with how sick you nephew was we would have stayed home.

I'm sorry your kids are sick.

If it was a slight cold and other kids were around, I would call the parents and discuss it with them.

Anything more serious as far as a sickness - I would not take my child out

No.

On the other hand, my brother's 9 month old had bronchitis on Christmas Eve/Day (even a ped appt. late Christmas Eve) and he dragged her from friend's house to friend's houseChat Icon Chat Icon

THAT sick, we'd stay home.

A little cold, we'd probably go.

But we also have no other kids in our family.

NO!!!! Honestly I hate when parents take their children out when they are contagious. It is one thing when your child has had an illness and has been on antibiotics for a while but the after effects linger for a long time - but they aren't contagious. But I keep DD home if I even suspect a cold or anything. I would feel horrible if she gave it to any other child - esp b.c you never know - just b.c you or your child have a minor cold doesn't mean the next child doesn't get pneumonia and end up in the hospital.

We were unable to celebrate Thanksgiving this year b.c DD got Coxsackie and then gave it to DH and I. Now she has some sort of stomach bug and I have already cancelled going to my parents home tomorrow for New Years Day - they are disappointed but honestly it wouldn't be fair to expose them to anything DD has or DH and I might be carrying.

If more people (adults and kids) stayed home when they were sick- fewer people would get sick. I guess I'm more conscience of this esp now that I'm pregnant and concerned about what I might catch that could harm the baby.

Ear infection, cold, etc. we go out.
Fever, vomiting, anything more serious, we stay in.

I don't want to pass it to someone else's child or to make my child worse while his/her immune system is already working on fighting one illness.

eta. if they were on an anitbiotic & the contagious time period has passed, we would go out.

Basically I go by the daycare rules. 24 hours fever free/illness free.

Same here. Not only would I not want to infect anyone else, but I would not want my sick DC to get sicker...KWIM?

I cannot believe that they did not even call to tell you what was going on. Chat Icon

I would agree with this. I did not mention in my first response b/c you mentioned that the kid was still sick enough to have vomitted on your kitchen floor. Chat Icon Really that is not fair to the kid either.Chat Icon

A cold...we go.

Anything else, we don't.

DD has a cold right now and a horrible cough...her cough sounds like bronchitis, but she always coughs like that when she has a cold...

It depends. If DS just caught a cold or some bug, yes, we definitely stay home. Just as well for him also, he needs his rest.

But if he is still sniffly and he has been sick several days, I might bring him out. It depends though--if he has a cough or a fever, definitely not, but if he's just a little stuffy and otherwise seems himself, plus he seems to be past the early contagious days, I would take him out.

Re: If your kids are sick on a holiday do you take them out anyway?

DS was on antibiotics for about 4 days before Christmas and my husbands cousins son was on antibiotics as well. DS had a sinus infection so we did go b/c he wasnt really contagious per se. I didnt let him share anything and of course made sure he didnt put stuf fin his mouth.

If he was throwing up or had the croup, we wuold have stayed home. I am a germ phobe.

I'd stay home of DD was sick. We've done it before. There are plenty of days to get together. We had Thanksgiving with my parents a week before Thanksgiving b/c the flights were too much over the Thanksgiving holiday. There are ways to make things work without making other sick.

I completely 100% agree with this. Whenever I think DS is getting sick, is sick or is getting over being sick I do not take him to classes or play groups and cancel any plans we may have. Thank God he hasn't been sick on a holiday yet! Chat Icon
