Re: if your looking to buy a home...
We've been looking for a while. We are aiming for under $325, but we've been pre-approved for $100k more than that. If a house that had all our needs was in our range in our target town we'd go for it.
We need: 4br 2 bathroom Formal LR/DR Family room Garage OR basement At least 1/4 acre but prefer closer to 1/2.
ETA: We' love to be in south shore Suffolk (Bayport/BluePoint, Sayville, Oakdale, West Islip, East Islip, Babylon) But we're being realistic and lloking for towns that have a bargain.

We are looking in Dix Hills, West Islip, and Fort Solonga/Kings Park. Maximum $750k and no more than $15k taxes. I am hoping that more comes on in the market in Jan/Feb because we already sold and we are moving into a rental.

We bought in Carle Place this year.. great choice!! It might be a challenge to find something for less than $400k though.

We don't like to swim, so we would not be willing to put the $$$ and effort into the upkeep of the pool, and since I am PG I worry about the safety of our children with a pool in the backyard. I'd much rather have that space for the kids to play, and not worry about them falling in. It's added homeowner insurance, and since we have no need/want for a pool, it would be an additional expense to fill it.
At this point since it is a buyer's market, we have the luxury of being picky and waiting for our dream home without a pool. But, for homeowners, know that it definitely does not for certain add value to the home.
We'd be willing to just take apart an above ground pool, so I'm just talking about the in ground pools.

Re: if your looking to buy a home...
don't totally count out houses with in ground pools...ours is completely fenced in a corner of our yard. the yard is pretty large, so we have had people come over and didn't realize that was part of our yard. It's completely fenced (real fence) so our kids run around the back yard without any fear. Just saying - there may be a house out there that is workable.
I'm not sure about the insurance...I don't pay more than what I see other LIFers pay, but I do think our taxes are about $1000 more.
I will say that while we have an IGP now, we don't really care if we have one in the next house.

But since we actively don't want it, we need to factor in the cost of filling it, so that's a minus for us, regardless of the safety issues. I won't have it just sitting there without being maintained, so our only option is filling it since we won't maintain it.

Re: if your looking to buy a home...
Well maintained, move in condition 3br/1.5+ bath in Nassau on the LIRR main line, like Floral Park, NHP, etc or (maybe) Williston Park. Flat backyard with little or no lawn (seriously, we work too much to worry about mowing and weeding a half an acre). We just need enough space for a new (or existing!) deck.
Has to be our Forever home. We're only going through this process once!

Under $8,500 in taxes in these areas are going to be HARD to come by. I live in merrick and dont know anyone who's taxes are under $10k.
