If you're a reader, did your parents read?

I love to read books, always have.

Growing up, I always remember my mom reading something, whether it was a trashy novel or some kind of thriller. My father read too, when he ever had any downtime.

I think because I always saw them reading, it instilled in me the desire to read. I think it was a great example they set (without even knowing they were doing anything good).

I don't think it mattered so much what they read, but just that they enjoyed it and did it often.

So my question is, if you are a reader, were your parents readers too? Is it something you picked up from them, or did you discover it all on your own?

My mom is ALWAYS reading...she is never without a book or a magazine.

My father has never read anything ever. Not even a menu at a restaraunt....my mother reads it for him. Please...don't get me started! Chat Icon Chat Icon

I am a big reader. So is my 6 year old. I make reading a big part of our day.

My dad was more of a reader than my mom...but nowhere near the reader that I was/am.

I've been reading to my baby in-utero...so hopefully s/he will take to reading the way I did Chat Icon

I am not, nor are my parents, but my husband is a voracious reader, as is his father. I think there is a definite link there.

Re: If you're a reader, did your parents read?

My dad is more of a newspaper reader. My mom is a big time reader! She has a long commute so I am sure thats why she goes through books so quickly. I love to read but I won't just read any ol thing. I have to be REALLY into something to fly right through it.

Re: If you're a reader, did your parents read?

I have always been a big reader. I used to get in trouble for staying up late to read and having the light on. I don't ever remember my mom reading and my dad only read hunting/fishing magazines. I guess I picked it up on my own. Chat Icon

I am a HUGE reader. As a result of my love of books and writing, I became an English teacher. I don't really remember anyone in my family reading with any consistency. Presently, my parents will read here and there--more my dad.

My DH is a bigger reader even than I am. His parents are both readers as well.

Our best hope for our girls is that they become as avid readers as we are. We feel it's the key to knowledge!

I'm an avid reader but neither of my parents were and still aren't. My mom did read to me a ton when I was little so that's probably where I got it.

My parents are HUGE readers and have bookcases all over their house. We went to the library all of the time and they really instilled a love of reading and books that I hope to pass onto my children.

Re: If you're a reader, did your parents read?

yup, my mom more so than my dad - she's always reading (trashy romance novels usually Chat Icon )

She also read a lot of books to us growing up, and I do the same with Ella.

Al and I are both big readers, so we hope our kids follow suit.

My mom was/is a very avid reader, and me and my sibs are as well.

DW and I read a lot, both for ourselves, as well as to DC. DS reads and writes his own books, and he reads well above his age level. DD also pretends to read books quite often. I think it's because she sees a book in front of me, DW, and her brother all the time, so it seems natural to her.

yes - different genres from each other and me, but always had a book. And both read the newspaper everyday.

Re: If you're a reader, did your parents read?

my mom was and is an avid reader. my father was illiterate for a long time (and is legally blind without glasses)

more of an emphasis was placed in my house on correctly reading MUSIC than anything else, but somehow I inherited my mothers love of books.

I am a HUGE reader, but the only one of my 5 siblings that is.

my husband likes to read move magazines and such than an actual book, but I am praying that my kids will appreciate both Shakespeare AND Bimmer magazine Chat Icon

Re: If you're a reader, did your parents read?

Both parents were big readers. My mom still is but my dad, not so much. I love to read and I sneak a chapter or two whenever I can at work.

I was always that girl in elem. school with a book in the corner of my desk ready to go whenever the teacher gave us a break or it was snack time/quiet time.

Re: If you're a reader, did your parents read?

No, I don't ever recall my parents reading much. My dad was more of a reader but was usually too busy working or coaching something to really sit down and read.

Now that they're older and have more time, both my parents have become avid readers, which I, myself, as a reader am glad to see.

Re: If you're a reader, did your parents read?

Yes. My mother always had a book in her hand. In fact my entire mother's family are readers and I was strongly encouraged to read from a very young age. I make sure I read to DD every night. If I have my way, she'll be reading shortly after learning to sit upright. Chat Icon

Re: If you're a reader, did your parents read?

My mom read a lot, but my dad, not so much - only the newspaper. My brothers and I were all good readers, but as adults, I think I continue to enjoy it more and read more often than they do.
