If you've ever considered going on the national bone marrow registry...
There is a bone marrow drive on LI taking place on Saturday, January 28 for a little 8 year old girl who is battling leukemia. She needs her 2nd bone marrow transplant to fight the 3rd time she is dealing with this terrible disease.
I am already on the registry as I had been following the story of a little 1 year old girl who needed a transplant. She found a match and is doing much better, however reading about what a child goes through to have a bone marrow transplant is gut wrentching.
Anyway, I believe it costs $65 to process each person tested and you will go on the national registry. If you are not a match for her, maybe you will be a match for someone else. I also understand that donating bone marrow today if you are a match is not the same as it was years ago... the process is not as invasive as it used to be. I would only hope that if anyone in my family needed a bone marrow transplant that someone out there would be a match.
Anyway, please spread this around. I don't know this family, but hope they find a match for this little girl.

Re: If you've ever considered going on the national bone marrow registry...
Thank you for posting this. My son goes to school with this little girl, they were in K together. It is truly heart wrenching to know Kaitlyn and her family are going through this again. We pray that another match is found and that she beats cancer for good.
If you have ever thought about being a bone marrow doner please make this the time you register.
Sat 1/28 10:00 - 4:00 Wantagh High School
Thanks

Quick question: if I want to join the registry, I have to pay $65 to be processed? I found the language on their Facebook page confusing.

They didn't ask me to pay $65 but asked me if I would like to make an optional donation to cover their costs of adding me to the registry.
I made a donation but I've seen plenty of people join and not make a donation.
They get funding from other places to help cover costs. So, although they appreciate a donation, they don't really make you feel obligated.
IMO it's more important to get more people on the registry.

I have always been registered through "Gift of Life".
I BELIEVE they will test you for FREE. They just send you a pack in the mail. I dontated the additional moneies to have my sample tested to the next level.

Re: If you've ever considered going on the national bone marrow registry...
You don't have to make a donation if you can't. Nora's family is attempting to raise money to help all of the swabs be processed as soon as possible. Some people are not eligible to become members due to age or health issues so they donate instead. Anything you can can help. You can check out how to register at marrow.org and it will tell you more about being a donor too..great resources

How ironic that last week I ordered the test for home. It should be here soon. I would love to be a match one day and give someone the gift of life.

yes, and you don't have to pay the $65. it is a voluntary donation. they are having a HUGE raffle and bake sale to help raise funds (not sure if it is to help cover these costs though). Kaitlyn is my friend's Goddaughter.

I just got back the registration & swabbing took maybe 15 min start to finish. There is still time to get over there!

Re: If you've ever considered going on the national bone marrow registry...
I hope they find matches! I've been on the registry for some time (20 years ago they had a drive for a classmate), but DH now wants to get on.
I could only hope that if my kids ever needed a BMT that there would be someone for them.
