IKEA & Kitchens Help

Hey All,

Ok, so we would love to redo our kitchen, but we don't want to spend a lot (its a galley kitchen in a condo, and we don't feel like putting more than 8K is worth it, being we may never see more than that in resale).

How easy was IKEA to work with?

About how much did you spend?

Thanks

Re: IKEA & Kitchens Help

Kerry, I saw Lauren's new kitchen this weekend and it was beautiful and she got all her cabinets and such from IKEA. FM her - I'm sure she'd offer some guidance!

Re: IKEA & Kitchens Help

I have seen some Ikea kitchens and they are beautiful.

When redoing the kitchen in our house we used a placed called Weismans they are on Sunrise Highway in West Babylon and they had great prices. Their cabinets are also Read To Assembly like Ikea, and for a small fee they will also put them together for you. They were about the same price as the in stock cabinets at Home Depot or Lowes but the quality was much better.

Re: IKEA & Kitchens Help

We've installed, ourselves, two Ikea kitchens so far. This is what the first one looked like:

I don't have pics of our new kitchen because we still have a few details to finish up, but we used the same cabinets and countertops. Just a totally different style tile for the floor and backsplash.

For both we installed the kitchen ourselves. I put the cabinets together, and Dh installed them on the wall. It took me a weekend to build all the cabinets - it's really easy after you do one or two and get the hang of it.

It took DH about 2 or 3 days to install the cabinets on the wall and floor. It can get a little complicated with measuring everything correctly and screwing it all in the right way, but if your DH is handy, he can probably handle it on his own.

OMG, I love it. Can I ask how much they cost? We are planning on installing them ouselves as well (esp. since DH is a carpenter).

Based on your cabinets, we would need about the same, just some more upper onces.

Did you get your countertop through them?

Re: IKEA & Kitchens Help

The first kitchen (the picture I put in the prior post) cost approximately $2500.00. We used the same cabinets for our current kitchen, but it's double the size, so it cost about $5000.

I absolutely adore them - they hold up REALLY well, wash easily and look very good. Mind you, it IS Ikea so every now and then you'll find there's a nick or scratch in a package or two, but Ikea is very, very good about returns.

Yup, we bought the countertops there as well - butcher block wood countertops - they hold up so well and are just gorgeous. Cheap too - I think for that kitchen they cost about $300. Maybe $500 - I can't remember exactly. DH installed that himself as well - it wasn't too hard other than the fact that they are very heavy. They also need a little more TLC than granite or laminate countertops - every month we have to oil them.

P.S. We also bought both sinks at Ikea - the one I have now I'm totally and completely in love with - white porcelain, double sink. We priced it and everywhere else it was at least $3k. At Ikea, I think it was $500!

Re: IKEA & Kitchens Help

We just did our kitchen and thought Ikea wasn't very helpful. We did our kitchen it is small apt kitchen about 10 cabinets for under 5k at home depot and that included corian countertops.

MY dh and a friend installed the cabinets, but the countertops were installed professionally.

Create a login for ikeafans.com ... there are lots of forums there similar to LIF but dedicated to Ikea and even forums specifically for Ikea kitchens.

There are tons of pictures as well for ideas. They give advice, recommendations for installing, installers, etc.

Re: IKEA & Kitchens Help

We got our cabinets at IKEA. I agree with pretty much everything Beth said. There were pretty easy to put together, once you get the hang of it. Some things are a little confusing because there are no words on the directins, just pictures.
We had to go back a few times because one thing we got didn't fit right, and they also gave us a couple of the wrong things the first time.
Ordering them is easy - you can download their design program - do that at home and then you can bring that into the store and they will put in the order for you. If you can go during the week, you won't have to wait as long in the kitchen section, it can get very crowded.
Waiting for them to pull all the boxes out of the storeroom can take a VERY long time. We went on a weekend and from the time we walked in to walking out we were in the store about 4 hours.
DH and his dad put them up, they come with these rails, so hanging them is pretty easy.
We did not get our counters from them, we ordered granite tiles from home depot. The appliances are not from there either.

I don't have any pictures of it totally finished but these are pretty close:
